and the world had won after all. But he’d go again, of course. He was a Christian and he’d go again. The ridge wind was sweet and the brown river spilling into the cornfields had a golden tint in the sun. The sky was blue and prom ising; vapor trails stretched across the horizon. He closed his eyes and was aware of the wind and the birds, and the river roaring like a miracle getting set to take place. But there was no shining angel there when he opened his eyes — just a man who had the soaked look of having fallen in the river. “Excuse me,” the man said, “ but if I continue walking in the direc tion of the river will I come to a W e wake in the morning and what do we do? W e rush and scurry the whole day through. N o time, must hurry, we can’t delay T o read our Bible, or stop to pray. But God has much more to do than we. Remember, He cares for each bird in the tree. He helps the beautiful flowers to grow. He sends the rain, the sun and the snow. He answers prayers and guides our way. He watches children while at their play. He takes every problem that to Him we bring, And when He solves them, He makes our hearts sing. And then, when day is almost through, He calls out the stars to light up the blue. Yes, God has so much to do And still, He always has time for you! bridge that isn’t out? I came across the river on a wild-goose chase. Thought there was a house here but obviously there isn’t. Nearly drowned, too, when that little boat upset.” Puffing from the climb, the man sank to the ground. He would have been real stylish in his brown suit if he hadn’t been in the river, Joey thought. “ By the way, my name is Dud ley Pendleton,” the man said. “ And you must be Joey.” TT ime for God — Florence Collina
