The Cornwall bike valet is coming to an event near you. The bike valet is like a coat check for your bicycle. When you show up with your pedal-powered machine at public events in Cornwall, you turn over your bicycle to the people operating the valet and you are provided with a ticket. When you’re finished at the event, you turn in your ticket and your bike is returned to you. The initiative by Cornwall’s Active Transportation Group is completely free and the hope is that it will spark more people to bring their bicycles out to public events. “Currently we have room for 50 bikes, but can make more room,” said Chantal Tranchemontagne, one of the creators of the bike valet. “We’re also happy to take skateboards or roller blades. We can help people who don’t want to carry those things around with them.” The bike valet is going to be in service at the Cornwall Food Fest, which is slated to take place

August 20 on Pitt Street. Likewise, one week later, on August 28 at the Eastern Ontario Garlic Festival in Lamoureux Park. “We just felt that Cornwall has hit this critical mass of cyclists,” said Tranchemontagne. “It just makes sense to have it when we have these kinds of big events, to leave car parking for people who really need it. It’s kind of a guilt-free way of enjoying the Food Fest and Garlic Fest. Then you can eat as much as you want and bike home. Our downtown core is so connected. With the Second Street bike lanes and recreation path, it’s super easy to get there. And you can park for free at the bike valet.” RONA Cornwall donated the materials for the construction of the bike vallet and the City of Cornwall Public Works department supported its construction by providing perimeter barriers.
