5x5 Men's World Cup Qualifying History

FIBA introduced the current World Cup qualifying system prior to the 2019 FIBA Men’s World Cup. More than 80 national teams from FIBA’s four regions compete over a 16-month period to earn a berth in the World Cup. Each national team plays 12 games over six two-game windows. Qualification for the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup was competed between November 2021 and February 2023, with seven teams from the Americas zone qualifying. The 2023 FIBA World Cup is set for Aug. 25-Sept. 10 in Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

USA MEN’S WORLD CUP QUALIFYING FEBRUARY 2023 RESULTS

MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY & SANTA CRUZ DO SOL, BRAZIL • FEBRUARY 11-14, 2022

The United States went 1-1 in the sixth round of qualifying for the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup, but punched the United States’ ticket to the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup. The U.S. beat Uruguay (88-77) in Montevideo, Uruguay before falling to Brazil (83-76) in Santa Cruz du Sol, Brazil. In its opener, the USA erased a 14-point first half deficit to knock off a feisty Uruguay team 88-77. The win clinched first place in FIBA Ameri- cas Group F. Langston Galloway, in his fifth World Cup Qualifying window, scored 11 straight U.S. points in the fourth quarter and led all scorers with 21 points. Xavier Moon had 17 points and six assists, while Deonte Burton and Reggie Perry had 11 and Craig Sword 10 for the Americans. Com- bined with a 105-71 victory Aug. 25 in Las Vegas, the Americans swept the two games from Uruguay in qualifying. Facing a halftime deficit, the U.S. scored the first seven points of the third quarter to pull to within 43-38 on a Huff dunk with 7:38 left. The invigorated play, led by the defense, continued and the U.S. finally tied the game 49-49 on a Perry lay-in with 3:43 to go in the third. Dusty Hannahs gave the U.S. its first lead since 2-0 on a free throw with 3:13 remaining. In the fourth quarter, Galloway, who went on a personal 11-1 run with back-to-back layups, a four-point play and another 3-pointer to put the U.S. up 76-67 with 5:03 to go. That allowed the Americans to breathe and then put away Uruguay. Against Brazil, the USA was unable to overcome poor free-throw shooting and struggled to hit shots in the fourth quarter, falling to Brazil 83- 76 in Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil. Langston Galloway was the only American in double figures with 19 points, but it was the 5-of-17 shooting from the free-throw line that spelled doom for the U.S. Brazil, meanwhile, was 25-of-32 from the line. Former NBA player Bruno Caboclo had 21 points and eight rebounds, while Yago Santos had 17 points to lead Brazil.

USA MEN’S WORLD CUP QUALIFYING NOVEMBER 2022 RESULTS

WASHINGTON, D.C. • NOVEMBER 11-14, 2022

The United States went 1-1 in the fifth round of qualifying for the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup, beating Colombia (88-81) after falling to Brazil (94-79) with both games taking place at Washington D.C.’s Entertainment & Sports Arena. In its first game versus Brazil, Langston Galloway led the U.S. in scoring with 14 points while Chris Chiozza contributed seven points and seven assists but it wasn’t enough to overcome a strong Brazil squad. Guard Georginho de Paula also shined for Brazil with 15 first half points. Like Bruno Caboclo, de Paula found his way to the foul stripe. In total, Brazil ended up shooting 20 free throws in the first half and hitting 17 of them. The U.S. played with much more energy in the second half but every time the Americans chipped away at the lead, Brazil answered right back. Fellow Americans Charlie Brown Jr. and Alize Johnson helped chip away at the Brazil lead, each with 10 points on the night. In its second game, the United States led from start to finish, beating the Colombians by seven points. The U.S. saw its shooting percentage improve against Colombia. The Americans frequently found themselves with quality looks from beyond the 3-point arc early in the game, and they took advantage by knocking down those opportunities. As a team, the U.S. started off shooting 5-of-9 from 3-point range as it jumped out to a 19-8 lead midway through the opening quarter. Galloway made his presence known in the fourth quarter. He scored on three consecutive U.S. possessions: a 3-pointer, a drive and spin move to the basket for a layup, and then another 3-pointer. Galloway’s standout play opened a 77-65 lead for the Americans with five minutes left to go in the game. From there, the U.S. was able to close out the final minutes of the game for the win. Galloway led the U.S. in scoring, finishing with 23 points. He was a major factor on the defensive end as well with two blocks and one steal. David Stockton finished with 23 points to go along with three assists.

USA MEN’S WORLD CUP QUALIFYING AUGUST 2022 RESULTS

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA & BARRANQUILLA, COLOMBIA • AUGUST 25-29, 2022

The United States opened the second round of qualifying for the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup with two wins over Uruguay (105-71) and Co- lombia (95-77). In its first game versus Uruguay, John Jenkins scored 22 points, Langston Galloway had 18 and DaQuan Jeffries 16 for the USA, who blew the game open with a 21-2 run early in the second quarter that turned a tight game into a comfortable cruise to victory. Behind seven points from Jeffries and five from Galloway, the Americans were able to take a 20-16 lead after the first quarter. Soon after in the second, the U.S. found its touch and exploded for a 21-2 run that made it 43-21 and a cruise to the finish. The U.S. also had 16 assists on 21 first-half buckets. The U.S. would go on to earn the win, 105-71.

Following the first win, the U.S. packed their bags and left for Barranquilla, Colombia.

After both teams traded opening scores, the U.S. went on a 10-0 run to take an early ten-point lead (12-2) with just under five minutes re- maining in the first frame. Colombia played tough, pulling within the U.S. 31-26 on Andre Felipe Ibarguen Andrews’ basket with 2:51 left in the half. The USA would lead at half, 45-32. After going 17-of-37 from the field in the first half the USA rewrote the script by shooting 18-of-28 in the final 20 minutes to keep the Colom- bians at bay. John Jenkins connected on eight 3-pointers en route to 26 points for the U.S., while Galloway and Jeffries added 14 apiece.
