Helena Talbot - “Feet and Poverty in And the Mountains Echoed ” (session 8) This project analyzes the representation of feet in literature, specifically in Khaled Housseini’s And the Mountains Echoed, and the cultural symbolism of feet. Our feet say a lot about us, whether we’re aware of it or not. They serve as a representation of both poverty and sexuality . This includes the care/state of our feet and the shoes we wear. I will examine significant aspects of shoes such as historical Chinese Foot-Binding, high-heels, and 21st-century sneaker culture. This relationship can be explored through historical, sociological, and anthropological research and is present in many cultures throughout the world. Conor Taylor - “The Correct Amount of Time to Exercise” (session 10) What is the correct amount of time to exercise? This is a question not many people know the answer to despite the significance and importance of it. I will explore the correct amount of time to exercise depending on the type of exercise as well as the individual needs of the person and whether or not people are undertraining or overtraining. The importance of this study is so people can exercise for the right amount of time which will keep people as healthy as possible both in the short and long run. Conor Taylor (session 16) - see Linder Curry Taylor - “The Bubonic Plague” (poster session) The Bubonic Plague’s primary outbreak was from 1346 – 1352. The French physician Alexandre Yersin discovered the bacterial cause of the bubonic plague for his bacteriological investigations in 1894 during an outbreak in Hong Kong. The bubonic plague was caused and spread by the bite of an infected flea carrying the bacterial disease called Y. pestis or Yersinia pestis, which enters the body through the flea bite and infects the lymphatic system or the lymph nodes. Which then become inflamed and swell into pus-like sores called buboes. The symptoms will include the development of fever, headache, chills, weakness, and one or more swollen, painful lymph nodes. The bubonic plague can be treated with solid antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline, Gentamicin, and Levofloxacin. For most people, the chances of the plague are extremely low, but anyone can get it. You’re more likely to get the bubonic plague if you visit or live in an area with the plague and you touch a living or dead animal, work with animals regularly, spend a lot of time outdoors or come into contact and spend time with someone who already has the bubonic plague. Shu’Ron Thompson - “Let’s Talk about Sex” (session 9) Sex education is isn’t supported in all 50 states, forcing individuals to receive wrong information, experiment, and do things out of curiosity. When experimenting and doing things out of curiosity, it can lead to consequences such as STIs, unwanted pregnancy and much more. In this short documentary, Lets Talk About Sex, I highlight the importance of sex education not only through statistics, but also through life experiences. If sex education was added to the curriculum in schools starting as early as middle school and continuing through graduation, individuals will be able to get the proper education and information when it comes to sex.
