So far it seems to be business as usual for Christmas for the Hawkesbury Food Bank with no sign yet of a surge in numbers of people needing help to have food on the table for the season. “The demand is fairly regular,” said Robert Levesque, a food bank spokesperson. “No more than the usual, though it is still early.” The past months of the pandemic have seen many Canadians, including residents in the Prescott-Russell region, become sudden- ly unemployed as non-essential businesses shut down and other businesses reduced their staff as a cost-cutting measure to help them survive the pandemic. The federal and provincial governments responded to the public health crisis with various funding assistance programs to help both citizens and companies survive the pandemic. “The senior governments have been pretty good about making sure people have money in their bank accounts,” said Lefebvre, adding that this has helped reduce the need for many to turn to the food for assistance. Distribution of Christmas food hampers is now underway and will continue until Decem- ber 22. Lefebvre noted that groups like the OPP with their annual food drive taking place December 12 at the Independent Grocers, help to ensure that everyone on the Christ- mas hamper list gets their package and that the food bank shelves are well-stocked for the start of 2021. “Our requests are still coming in but we hope to meet all demands,” Lefebvre said. “People have been very generous since the beginning of COVID-19.” Along with non-perishable food items, the food bank also welcomes donations of disposable diapers for all infant age and size ranges, toiletry items like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and other items like pet food or good conditon used clothing that would help a family in need to stretch their food budgets.
