LESSON: Did you know that glasses could be like people? These glasses look alike but they are far from being the same. One is false and the other true. As I tap them with this pencil, see if you can tell which is false. Yes, this one does not ring true. It is cracked. The other has a clear tone. You do not have to talk long with a boy or girl until you find out wheth er or not he or she rings true. In the Bible there are many peo ple mentioned who ring true like this glass. There was a time in the life of David when, because of a great plague, he needed to make an offer ing unto the Lord. He was told just where to go to make the offering. When he arrived at the appointed place, the man who owned the piece of land offered it to David together with oxen for a burnt sacrifice. Da

grown for food and people are hungry. The famine about which we are to study today was in the days when David was king of Israel. It was a long famine, lasting three years.

David knew that there was one sure way of finding the cause of the fam ine, so we read, “ . . . David enquired of the L ord ” (2 Sam. 21:1). Again we read, “ . . . And the L ord answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites” (v. 1). As we open the flaps on this piece of paper we read, “ Foolish Saul Mis treated Gibeonites, Bringing Judg ment.” This is what the Lord told David. David could have said, “ This was not anything I did. It was Saul who did this wrong and I don’t intend to do anything about it.” If he had taken this attitude, the famine would have continued. David did the right thing. He went to the Gibeonites and said, “ . . . What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the L ord ?” (2 Sam. 21:3). David did what the Gibeonites required and the fam ine ended. This should teach us that God often withholds His blessings because of sin. We should also know that God for gives when we confess our sins.

vid’s reply is very interesting. We read, “ And the king said unto Arau- nah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the L ord my God of that which doth cost me noth ing. So David bought the threshing- floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver” (2 Sam. 24:24). David was like this glass with the true tone; he was true even when it cost him something. This glass with the false note re minds me of other Scriptures. “He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness de ceit” (Prov. 12:17). And again we read, “ Lying lips are abomination to the L ord : but they that deal truly are his delight” (Prov. 12:22). END.
