A BMX race track in Cornwall?

FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca

Members of the Cornwall BMX Club are itching to see the creation of a race track in the surroundings of the city. “Our goal is to get a BMX Canada sanctio- ned track in Cornwall and to grow our club membership to help support this idea,” states the club’s website. Originating fromAmerica some 40 years ago, BMX was designed for kids to gain precious knowledge in order to someday join motocross racing. “When we take part in Provincials, we always have to travel to Kingston or Ottawa,” explained the president. In an effort at raising public awareness for the sport, Drouin wrote a proposal to Cornwall’s City Council. The fast track sport has gained bothmo- mentumand support throughout the nation, withmany race tracks being built in Canada and the United States. A total of eight of them are located in Ontario. Local members hope to soon make that nine. “Basically, we’re trying to promote fitness, all the while having fun,” explained club president Daniel Drouin. “It’s the only sport where the whole family can take part during the same day.” BMX racing is an all out event between at least three and nomore than eight riders, on pedal bikes, through a usuallyW-shaped track which, on average, measures 1100 feet

in length. The track is made of clay, with a start hill, jumps, humps, table tops, three high banked corners and a finish line. “It all started when my son wanted to start the sport, after seeing some videos on YouTube,” explained Drouin. “He’s nine years old and the #2 Provincial champion. I myself used to do mountain bike racing. My daughter also started BMX racing when she was two years old.” It’s a sport that’s enjoyed by the young and the old alike, with no age or gender res- triction in effect. Currently, there are riders in Ontario from 2-years old to 78-years old. Official races aremade up by dividing racers by individual age groups and skill levels. “It’s an individual sport that does not frown onmissing a race or practice,” outlines the club’s website. “In BMX, nobody sits on the bench. If you’re not on the track racing, you might be fixing a bike, tying a shoe, or just enjoying watching.” In addition, membership to the club is

free and so is a participant’s first race. St. Andrews “When we take part in Provincials, we always have to travel to Kingston or Ottawa,” explained the president. In an effort at raising public awareness for the sport, Drouin wrote a proposal to Cornwall’s City Council. Although some were supportive and receptive to the idea, ultimately, thematter was forwarded to dif- ferent departments, who in turn pointed Drouin to the local skateboard park. “That’s when we approached South Stormont with the same proposal,” added Drouin. “I met with Kevin Amelotte, Parks

and Recreation Supervisor. He said he liked the idea and suggested either St. Andrews or Long Sault.” Although he admits that the idea per say isn’t set in stone and that nothing is official just yet, he hopes that the future track can welcome Provincial races. “It’s all a matter of getting the land,” he said. “After that, we can start fundraising for the track. We’d love to have a fairly decent one, where we can invite BMX racers from around the province.” According to the president, the track would cost between $10,000 and $30,000 to build.

South Nation Conservation tree planting For the past 20 years, South Nation Conservation (SCN) has offered community tree planting services within its jurisdiction. This year, 120,000 trees will be added to the region’s forest cover. While orders have already been delivered for 2015, SNC urges residents to book their seedlings for next year. SNC offers property owners and organizations a variety of tree planting subsidies for idle land, stream banks and buffer strips. Over-the-counter sales are also available for smaller orders.“Depending on planting plans, property owners may be eligible for more than one subsidy,” SNC Forestry Technician Cheyene Ramsey said. “Community and residential tree planting is a great way to help boost local forest cover.” More information is available by contacting Ramsey at 877-984-2948, ext. 295. – Francis Racine Pousser un agent de police Un adolescent de 17 ans a été arrêté le 9 mai dernier et accusé d’agression criminelle envers un policier et d’avoir résisté à une arrestation.
