April, a busy month for the Cornwall Regional Task Force
FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca
April was quite a busy month for the Cor- nwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) mem- bers, as they arrested a total of seven individuals and seized 1986.7 kg of fine cut tobacco, 11 cases and 131 baggies of cigarettes, six cases of cigars, 206 grams of marijuana and three vehicles. The individuals were all charged under the provisions of the Excise Act, 2001, and face charges under the provincial Tobacco Tax Act for possession of unmarked ciga- rettes. On April 1, CRTFmembers were conduc- ting surveillance on a garage located at 1123 Ontario Street in Cornwall. A vehicle that left the location was subsequently stopped and found to contain contraband tobacco. Officers searched the garage and located several baggies of unstamped tobacco, a certain amount of marijuana and several empty “dime bags” in preparation for distri- bution. Marcel Campeau, 62, was charged with Possession of Marijuana for the Purpose of Trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. On April 7, members of the CRTF were assisting Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) with a vehicle that had run the port of entry (POE) a few days prior and was re- located at 318 First Street West, Cornwall. An investigation revealed that the vehicle was driven by 35-year-old Cory Benedict, of Akwesasne. While investigating this incident, Benedict arrived at the residence driving a bicycle with a large duffle bag on his back and a smaller bag on his front. The bags were passed to a female at the residence and brought into the house. Following his arrest, the residence was searched and contraband

tobacco was located. On April 9, 26-year-old Shawn Fontaine of Long Sault was arrested. The officers seized a total of 210.7 kg of fine cut tobacco and six cases of cigars. Members of the CRTF were called to the POE on April 15, and arrested Louis Wayne Jacobs for being in possession of contraband tobacco. On April 21, CRTF officers were conduc- ting surveillance in the Bainsville area when they noticed a boat without navigation lights leaving the shoreline. A short time later, a U-Haul truck was seen leaving the vicinity eastbound on Highway 2, Bainsville. The vehicle was stopped not long after, and found to contain several garbage bags filled with fine cut tobacco. There was a total of 1,710 kg of tobacco that was seized along with the U- Haul truck. The driver of the vehicle, 55-year- old Michel Bélanger, of Sainte-Barbe, Que- bec, and the passenger, 24-year-old Everick Radcliffe, of Longueuil, Quebec, were both arrested and charged with Possession of Unstamped Tobacco. On April 25, Carole Richmire, 55-years- old, was crossing through the POE in Cor- nwall and, after being questioned by the CBSA officer, was the subject of a search of her vehicle. Located in the trunk of the vehicle was one case of contraband tobacco. She was arrested and charged. A total of 1986.7 kg of fine-cut tobacco, 11 cases and 131 baggies of cigarettes, six cases of cigars, 206 grams of marijuana and three vehicles were seized by the Cornwall Regional Task Force in April.

A BMX race track in Cornwall?
FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca
Members of the Cornwall BMX Club are itching to see the creation of a race track in the surroundings of the city. “Our goal is to get a BMX Canada sanctio- ned track in Cornwall and to grow our club membership to help support this idea,” states the club’s website. Originating fromAmerica some 40 years ago, BMX was designed for kids to gain precious knowledge in order to someday join motocross racing. “When we take part in Provincials, we always have to travel to Kingston or Ottawa,” explained the president. In an effort at raising public awareness for the sport, Drouin wrote a proposal to Cornwall’s City Council. The fast track sport has gained bothmo- mentumand support throughout the nation, withmany race tracks being built in Canada and the United States. A total of eight of them are located in Ontario. Local members hope to soon make that nine. “Basically, we’re trying to promote fitness, all the while having fun,” explained club president Daniel Drouin. “It’s the only sport where the whole family can take part during the same day.” BMX racing is an all out event between at least three and nomore than eight riders, on pedal bikes, through a usuallyW-shaped track which, on average, measures 1100 feet

in length. The track is made of clay, with a start hill, jumps, humps, table tops, three high banked corners and a finish line. “It all started when my son wanted to start the sport, after seeing some videos on YouTube,” explained Drouin. “He’s nine years old and the #2 Provincial champion. I myself used to do mountain bike racing. My daughter also started BMX racing when she was two years old.” It’s a sport that’s enjoyed by the young and the old alike, with no age or gender res- triction in effect. Currently, there are riders in Ontario from 2-years old to 78-years old. Official races aremade up by dividing racers by individual age groups and skill levels. “It’s an individual sport that does not frown onmissing a race or practice,” outlines the club’s website. “In BMX, nobody sits on the bench. If you’re not on the track racing, you might be fixing a bike, tying a shoe, or just enjoying watching.” In addition, membership to the club is
free and so is a participant’s first race. St. Andrews “When we take part in Provincials, we always have to travel to Kingston or Ottawa,” explained the president. In an effort at raising public awareness for the sport, Drouin wrote a proposal to Cornwall’s City Council. Although some were supportive and receptive to the idea, ultimately, thematter was forwarded to dif- ferent departments, who in turn pointed Drouin to the local skateboard park. “That’s when we approached South Stormont with the same proposal,” added Drouin. “I met with Kevin Amelotte, Parks
and Recreation Supervisor. He said he liked the idea and suggested either St. Andrews or Long Sault.” Although he admits that the idea per say isn’t set in stone and that nothing is official just yet, he hopes that the future track can welcome Provincial races. “It’s all a matter of getting the land,” he said. “After that, we can start fundraising for the track. We’d love to have a fairly decent one, where we can invite BMX racers from around the province.” According to the president, the track would cost between $10,000 and $30,000 to build.

South Nation Conservation tree planting For the past 20 years, South Nation Conservation (SCN) has offered community tree planting services within its jurisdiction. This year, 120,000 trees will be added to the region’s forest cover. While orders have already been delivered for 2015, SNC urges residents to book their seedlings for next year. SNC offers property owners and organizations a variety of tree planting subsidies for idle land, stream banks and buffer strips. Over-the-counter sales are also available for smaller orders.“Depending on planting plans, property owners may be eligible for more than one subsidy,” SNC Forestry Technician Cheyene Ramsey said. “Community and residential tree planting is a great way to help boost local forest cover.” More information is available by contacting Ramsey at 877-984-2948, ext. 295.
Here are a few facts and tips to help you navigate your way through a safety talk. • According to the Canadian Police Information Centre’s 2013 report, some 41,000 children under age 18 were reported missing. Thankfully, more than half the reports were removed within 24 hours of the alert. That is why it’s important to have the safety talk with your kids. • Most abductions are carried out by a person who knows the child, especially by a non-custodial parent. Review with your children which adults are authorized to pick them up at school and daycare. Do some role playing to reinforce how to get help from a parent or caregiver if an unplanned-for situation arises. • Remind yo ur kids that it’s okay to be polite to strangers, but that being polite doesn’t mean going along with a request or engaging in a conversation. Teach them to check with a parent, teacher or caregiver before going anywhere with an adult or older child. And if a situation doesn’t feel right, they should feel free to get help from a community resource person or trusted adult friend or neighbour.
