Highway

We were about just nine the summer of ought 5, On a drive down the highway having the best time. Us riding in the backseat going 65. We had never left each other’s side as we grew We were partners in crime, boy did that never change. Best friends forever, you were the one I just knew 15 years later we had a family and you left for overseas. I prayed with hands on my heart that you would be safe, Yellow ribbon, that you would come back home to me. I received a call and then I picked up the phone. KIA they said, you weren’t coming back at all. I fell to the floor; we had lost one of our own. I told the kids the words the messenger had spoke. As we laid you down to rest and I couldn’ t breathe and Sargent gave me the flag and handed me a note. It said “Don’t worry, everything will be alright. If you’re missing me think of when we took that drive Riding down the highway when we were about nine. My spirit and my heart will always be with you, Love you forever, you know that no matter what. You may not hear the words, but they’ll always be true.” I turned the letter over and there was a key. On it were engraved the nicknames of you and me. Cried a few tears, how I wished you were there with me. Picked up the key, the kids, and took them on a drive, Same exact one we rode the summer of ought 5; Down the highway where we used to have the best time. Wind blowing through our hair, I’m going 65 I’m not alone though, this time the kids are with me Riding in the backseat just like when we were nine.
