RPP COLLABORATES IN REDEVELOPMENT OF IMPORTANT QUB CAMPUS SITE TO CREATE A HOLISTIC, CUTTING EDGE FACILITY FOR STUDENTS… DESIGN TEAM LEAD ARCHITECT
R PP Architects led an integrated design team working with Queen’s University Belfast to redevelop its Student Union and Student Services facilities in to one accessible hub. The team comprised specialist fields such as architecture, interior design, structural and civil engineering, MEP services engineering, landscape design and PD services. The project involved the demolition of the existing Students’ Union Building and the creation of a new, multi-functional student facility of approximately 11,000 sqm over four storeys plus rooftop plantroom. RPP partnered with London-based Hawkins\Brown Architects (HB) on the architecture and the design of the building was very clearly penned by HB who took the lead in the development of
the project brief and the concept design up to planning stage. At Stage 4, RPP and HB split the technical design, with HB continuing with the development of the exterior packages and RPP taking control of the interior. RPP took over the primary responsibility of delivering the project through to completion at Stage 5, the design team being novated to the principal contractors, Felix O’Hare Limited. The site presented a number of challenges not least it’s location at the heart of the Queen’s Conservation Area. Through a long and detailed engagement process with BCC Planning department, RPP was able to demonstrate that the modern building would make a major contribution to the
