merchants and directly related to the different job requirements. “All our departments are benchmarked digitally, so we can see if one area is lagging behind and work out what’s causing the issue. For example, in transport we can see how long a lorry driver is on your site waiting to unload. We’ll examine the cause, perhaps you are busy serving customers in the morning. If that’s the case, we’ll change the route to drop-off at a more convenient time. “We’re using the system to ensure we optimise the routes and minimise the amount of travel and the amount of fuel used.” Customers are serviced by 15 well liveried trucks with an Express Delivery and “Milk Run” to ensure that the objective of same or next day service is met. Haldane Fisher Newry also acts a feeder depot for other group branches. Staff training is also very important with both internal and external training taking place.

In the area of sustainability 25% of cars are EV and a further 50% are hybrid. “We have installed EV chargers on site and we’re fitting out chargers throughout the group at the moment,” explained Gary. “We would like to increase the number of EV cars within our fleet substantially, but we’re being held back by the current charging infrastructure in Northern Ireland. “When our counterbalanced fork lifts are due for replacement we are doing so with EV models – these have been a great success.” Lighting in buildings and offices is now controlled by sensors ensuring that power is off when the facility is not in use and light switches are no longer a feature. The introduction of solar panels has helped to reduce energy costs this year by 14%. “As the head office, Haldane Fisher Newry was the first to install solar panels,” said Gary. “We are putting solar into a lot of our larger branches and this will be rolled out throughout the network over the next few years.”

Upon visiting the branch, Awards judges remarked that Haldane Fisher Newry, was a store with great systems and excellent health and safety protocols, adding, “While one of the island’s largest stores, it is maintained to the highest standard.”
