EXCELLENCE IN BUILDING PROJECTS WINNER: GRAHAM FOR DRUMAROAD CLEAR WATER BASIN GRAHAM scoops award for water storage facility
GRAHAM scooped the 2022 Northern Ireland Region Certificate of Excellence award for outstanding merit in the use of concrete. This project provided a storage facility to ensure the continued security of potable water supply to 200,000 homes in Co Down and Belfast areas. The scheme, delivered for Northern Ireland Water, is one of the largest improvement projects carried out in recent years and will bring a range of benefits for customers. Following the works a new water storage tank will now serve the existing Drumaroad and Chapel Hill water pumping stations to supply treated water for distribution areas. GRAHAM also constructed an additional pumping station to transfer flows outside normal operational conditions which will provide extra resilience to the network. The upgrade involved the construction of a new water storage tank, with a capacity
of 36 million litres, the equivalent of 14 Olympic sized swimming pools. working at height and improve health and safety as well as providing high quality finishes; remodelling of tank designs to avoid poor ground conditions, crushing and reuse of site won excavated rock and utilising existing assets and infrastructure to reduce project costs. Other sustainable elements were implemented such as a gravity pipeline solution from the new valve chamber instead of pumping mains, no spoil disposal off site and no import of aggregates, other than pipe bedding.
