EXCELLENCE IN BUILDING PROCESS WINNER: CREAGH CONCRETE PRODUCTS FOR SENSOR-BASED DIGITALISATION OF PRECAST CONCRETE PRODUCTION TOOMEBRIDGE

Creagh’s digital advances earns Society acclaim

Creagh Concrete Products Ltd has won the 2022 award for Excellence in Building Process. This project saw the Toomebridge based company work in association with Queen’s University Belfast to develop a bespoke digital monitoring system. This unique system allows them to accurately track concrete curing and real time strength prediction during the production of precast units. The precast concrete sector relies on large volume of production to reduce overheads. As the demand for Creagh’s flagship product Rapidres® increased, the company required better integration and coordination between different departments within Creagh and the supply chain. A sensor system was needed for optimising factory occupation time and also to retrieve the products efficiently. Commercially available systems are advanced, but are cost prohibitive for

the precast sector. Working together the team at Creagh and Queen’s University jointly developed a four- part sensor system. There are several components to this system, the most fundamental of which is an affordable single use wireless sensor. Second is an array of receivers and transmitters designed to get the data onto cloud, followed by software. This together with the ‘tag and track’ concept means that Creagh can optimise curing duration, handle products safely, prevent failings, allow faster production and accurately track products from the factory to the construction site. As a result of this project, Creagh now has an in-house solution for product monitoring and tracking and the sensor cost is 1/10th the value of the nearest competitor solution. This represents a saving of £272k in the first year and £372k every year thereafter.

The Creagh team proudly display their award for Excellence in Building Process, conferred by the Concrete Society’s Northern Ireland division.

“This unique system allows them to accurately track

concrete curing and real time strength prediction during the production of precast units.”
