PREMIER FOR YOU

APRIL 2019

“ I’ve been with Premier Rehab PT from day one, but I’ve known Kelly for a bit longer. We met when we were both working at a company called HealthSouth. I was at the front desk, and Kelly was there as a physical therapist. We’d been working together for a few years when Kelly started to build her own company, and when she asked me to come and join her team, I did. Having been here so long, I’ve had the opportunity to watch the business grow from one clinic to six, and it’s been incredibly FROM DAY ONE My Experience Working at Premier Rehab

what they need and being flexible. There was a time when my daughter, Gabrielle, broke her leg at school, and no one could really take care of her at home. Kelly was sweet enough to allow her to come into work with me, and she even went so far as to set up a place for Gabrielle to rest until she was well enough to return to school. Usually when I’m not absorbed in numbers and doing my best to make sure our patients cared for, I like to relax at home and travel. One of my favorite places to visit is Colorado, where I love to go skiing. I make it a point to go at least once a year. This summer, I’ll spend a lot of time with my family. Gabrielle is in college right now, and my second daughter, Alyssa, is finishing up her senior year in high school before she plans to attend college in the fall. During the break, I’m going to spend plenty of time with the girls and my husband, Robert. He and I will celebrate our 23rd anniversary this year, and I’m hoping that either the two of us or the whole family will be able to go out to dinner to celebrate. –Maria Underwood

inspiring. It’s a huge accomplishment for Kelly, and I’m happy to have been a part of it. As the company expanded and changed, I also went through a few transitions here. When I started at Premier Rehab, I worked in a couple of different areas, including at the front office, as a tech assistant, and finally in the billing department. Before I started working with Kelly, my aim was to become a medical assistant. Throughout college, I studied to get my degree in that area, and I even worked in a doctor’s office for a while. I mainly assisted in the back of the office, seeing patients and giving injections. But the doctor also taught me how to do a bit of the billing side of things. Even though I miss working as a medical assistant sometimes, I’ve found that I enjoy working with numbers; it’s my niche. Right now, I am the billing administrator for Premier Rehab, and it’s the perfect place for me to be. I’ve always had a knack for numbers and making sure everything is balanced out, and now I can put that skill into action. There’s a fair amount of investigating that I have to do,

I get a satisfying feeling when everything comes together — not just because the numbers align but also because it means our patients have been taken care of. Having been with the company for so long and serving in many different roles, I’ve truly felt like a contributor to Premier Rehab. The company Kelly built isn’t a corporate business where you’re swallowed up by numbers. Everyone here matters and what we do positively influences our goals as a company. Kelly has helped foster that environment for all of us. She treats her team and patients extremely well by making sure everyone has

WALK TO WORK DAY A Start to a More Active Life

OBSERVING THE HOLIDAY To celebrate Walk to Work Day, simply slip on your walking shoes, grab a portable breakfast, and head out the door! Be sure to bring an extra outfit and shoes with you as walking in high heels, dress shoes, and/or dress attire can be uncomfortable. For people who don’t have the time, try taking a short walk around the workplace during breaks or lunch. Getting in a 15-minute walk during the day will help you feel more refreshed and ready to get back into the grind. You can also invite other coworkers or friends to walk with you. OTHER MODES OF TRANSPORTATION Although Walk to Work Day encourages people to walk, there are other ways to get to work without having to drive. Biking is an excellent means of transportation and can be helpful for people who might have a longer commute. If you don’t own a bike but are still in need of a quick transport between two locations, you can hop on an electric scooter. These scooters have appeared across America over the past year or so and have proven handy for individuals need to get from point A to point B quickly.

Everyone

knows that walking is healthy

for us, but not very many people have the chance

to stretch their legs. With a busy schedule, you might not have the luxury to get up earlier and get a quick brisk walk in. But that doesn’t mean routines can’t be changed. Walk to Work Day is an unofficial

holiday that encourages people to walk more in their daily lives. Finding the time to walk for 30 minutes a day can help you lose weight, reduce the chance of heart disease and diabetes, and improve emotional and mental health. A LITTLE HISTORY Walk to Work Day takes place on the first Friday of April every year and has been celebrated since 2004. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services promoted the holiday with enthusiasm as a way to counter the alarming rise in obesity and health issues throughout the country. Since its debut, Walk to Work Day has been picked up by people, businesses, and organizations across the world to inspire people everywhere to exercise more.

Walk to Work Day offers a perfect chance to change up your routine for a more active lifestyle. Let this holiday be the first step in many that will come!

JOINING A SPORT And Having Fun!

IMPROVING YOUR SOCIAL LIFE Humans are social creatures by nature, but meeting new people can be difficult, especially among adults who are busy working and/or taking care of their families. Joining a sports team allows you to expand the number of people in your social life, and you’ll already know one thing everyone has in common! DOING SOMETHING YOU LOVE Nothing beats playing on a team you love with other people who share your enthusiasm. If you’re trying to stay physically fit, going to the gym every day can become repetitive and dull. Taking part in practices, team gatherings, and experiencing the thrill of a game is far more satisfying than running on a treadmill for 30 minutes. Getting out and enjoying yourself is very important, so why not do it with an activity you love? Whether you or your kids are planning on joining a team this year, remember to stay safe and have fun!

World Health Day takes place on April 7 every year, motivating and encouraging people across the globe to pursue a healthy lifestyle. April also means that baseball, golf, and

soccer are in full swing. While many adults are getting ready to watch or participate in their favorite sports, many kids are eagerly looking forward to doing the same. Joining a team can have many benefits. HEALTH Being active in general is a great way to keep fit, and joining a local sports team can help motivate you to stay in shape. Being on a team requires a lot of exercises including lifting, running, and jumping, which ultimately enables you to keep up with the players around you. Your teammates will also drive you to achieve, giving you the push you need to stay active. Playing on a team can also improve players’ mental health, boost self-confidence, build strong relationships, and an improve life skills like leadership.

3 Travel Myths You Should Stop Believing PARIS ON A BUDGET?

Traveling has many social and educational benefits, but some people have hesitations that prevent them from jetting off on new adventures. Below are three debunked travel myths to give you some ease as you plan your summer vacation! MYTH: VACATIONS ARE EXPENSIVE. Fact: You can travel anywhere on a budget. Tracking flights to score the best deal, setting spending limits, and packing meals are a few ways to save money. Hostels and Airbnbs are great alternatives to spendy hotel stays. Additionally, you don’t have to cross the country to have a great trip. Every state has museums, unique roadside attractions, historical sites, and a booming nightlife. When you know your price limits and what you want to do, traveling can be a fun and inexpensive venture. MYTH: TRAVELING IS DANGEROUS. Fact: If you’re smart about what you do and where you go, traveling can be safe. Go with your gut and only stay somewhere that is approved by travel

guides. Visit places you feel comfortable in, and do your research by reading travel blogs, websites, and books to find places that have been vetted by others. Traveling in groups can also be a great way to lower your risk of danger. As long as you plan ahead, you will have a safe trip. MYTH: JET LAG IS CAUSED BY A LACK OF SLEEP. Fact: While jet lag can make you sleepy, it’s actually caused by a disruption in your circadian rhythm. Our bodies are cyclical, and the circadian rhythm is set by both a natural need for your body to reset and outside forces, such as your job, time zone, and diet. Travel can disrupt this rhythm and routine, which leaves you lethargic during and after your vacation. Sticking to water before and during your flights and staying physically active during and after traveling are great ways to fight jet lag and get back into your normal rhythm. Don’t let these travel myths keep you from seeing the world. Set a budget, go with your gut, and prepare for a shifting rhythm to make your next adventure the best one yet.
