HAVWOODS GRADING

How we grade our timber flooring Havwoods’ wood flooring is sourced from many different countries, each with different grading rules and industry standards. To make it easier for you, we have established our own definitions.

Prime Prime grade has few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size; there will also be a minimal amount of sapwood and filler, if any at all. There will be a relatively small amount of colour variation in the timber itself.

Select Select grade will have a mix of almost prime boards with other planks which have more knots of a limited size. Expect some variation in tone from heartwood and sapwood as well as small checks (cracks across the growth ring). There will be some filled elements, such as broken knots. Classic Classic grade floors show the natural variation of timber without allowing some of the more characterful features in more rustic grades. Planks with very few knots will be mixed with some planks containing larger knots or checks (cracks across the growth ring) which may be filled. Variation between tone from heartwood and sapwood can be expected but is controlled. Character Character grade will include both heartwood and sapwood and allows a wider range of colour variation. Knots are larger and you should expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). Rustic Known as either natural or rustic grade this allows a virtually limitless size and number of knots. Heartwood will be used, there will be colour variation, sapwood and filler; you should also expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings).

Every board tells its own story Sapwood

Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in colour than the heartwood and certain fuming, smoking and colouring processes emphasise the sapwood since it doesn’t react to such treatments to the same degree. (The effect of these treatments on planks containing sapwood is shown below) By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoods’ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.

Smoking and firing Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the hardwood is exposed to ammonia gas for 24 (single) or 48 (double) hours. The colouration is surface deep only. Unlike staining, smoking reacts to the chemical composition of the individual plank, so the ultimate shade will vary. This variation is considered an asset, however if you prefer a more even tone we suggest you consider choosing stained rather than smoked wood. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark colour runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.

Knots and fillers A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colours: Grey, brown and black are shown here. The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch. Medullary rays, checks and shakes These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.

Processes

Sanded The surface is finely sanded to create a smooth, flat finish that showcases the natural beauty of the timber. Colour variation, grain detail and species characteristics become the defining visual features of the floor.

Brushed A mechanical brushing process is used to gently remove the softer growth from the timber, enhancing the natural grain pattern and creating a subtle texture underfoot whilst maintaining an otherwise flat surface.

Brushed

Heavy Brushed An intensified brushing process removes deeper layers of softer timber growth, highlighting the grain and creating a more pronounced textured finish. The result is a floor with greater depth, character and a naturally aged appearance.

Coatings

Unfinished Allowing you to be the artist, this is a completely natural surface, without treatment. It’s up to you to finish how you wish. Unfinished timber can include different grades of character so all you have to do is re-sand the surface once installed and create using the blank canvas. Lacquered This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden floor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic.

Oiled Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the floor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled floors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage. The origins of end grain Originally used extensively in the 19th century to pave busy streets across Europe and Asia, end grain timber was valued for its ability to withstand relentless, heavy traffic. By the early 20th century, it became a standard flooring solution in factories and workshops, where strength, stability and longevity were essential. Unlike conventional wood surfaces, end grain is formed by cutting across the growth rings of the tree, revealing the beautiful character of the wood rings and using the densest part of the timber. This structure not only creates a distinctive, unique appearance, but also delivers exceptional performance – offering enhanced durability, impact resistance and natural shock absorption underfoot.

S et within a beautifully restored Edwardian home, The Old Rectory demonstrates how carefully selected timber flooring from our beautiful Henley collection can help bridge the gap between period architecture and contemporary family living. In the dining room, the use of HW1591 Antique Versailles, part of our warm and inviting Auburn colour group, creates a focal point within the space, introducing texture, craftsmanship and a sense of occasion. Set against the simplicity of the plank flooring used elsewhere in the home, the Versailles design provides contrast while remaining sympathetic to the heritage of the property.

Our popular BPF16/1612/180 Portland plank was used throughout the hallways, landings, bedrooms and bathroom, creating a seamless sense of flow across the home.
