LOW BACK PAIN PREVENTION TIP

Studies show that the majority of people in the U.S. report suffering from low back pain at some point in their lives. In most cases, low back pain is mild and short lived. This can result from movements/positions outside of normal movement patterns (i.e. raking leaves or shoveling snow). More severe and enduring low back pain can be the result of asymmetric, low amplitude, and repetitive strain placed on the lumbar spine or the musculature supporting it. Poor seated posture associated with deskbound occupations is one example. For others, low back pain can be an acute, debilitating situation requiring corticosteroids, medication or surgery. Often, pain at this level is due to a herniation in a lumbar disc, and subsequent pressure on lumbar nerve roots.

A general rule of thumb to help prevent low back pain from beginning is to keep your abdominals strong to stabilize the lumbar spine, and to keep your hamstrings stretched to prevent excessive pull on the pelvis. If you are experiencing low back pain, studies show that seeing a physical therapist within 14 days of onset will lead to the best outcomes and return to prior level of function.
