2017 Adopt-A-Hole Following a very successful program in 2016, we’re looking for golfers to join us this year in helping to keep our ANCC courses in great condition, despite the 80,000+ rounds per year that we play on them. This is a huge amount of play, and when you play golf, you create divots and ball marks – it’s part of the game. It’s our responsibility as golfers to fix our divots and ball marks – and that is part of the etiquette of the game. Your course needs you. Please help us protect our investment and keep our playing enjoyable. Click here to read more and send us an email at anccadoptahole@gmail.com for full details.

Attention Junior Golfers If you have NOT been receiving emails regarding ANCC Junior Golf,

please forward your email to Jimmy Kowalski, PGA at jimmy.kowalski@ancc.org to receive junior golf updates.

ANCC Men’s ‘B’ Team & Qualifying The ANCC Men’s “B” Team competition begins late April and is a great way to meet other ANCC members and play competitive golf against other clubs in the area. TOURNAMENT ENTRY/STANDARD RULE OF PRIORI TY Entry into all ANCC Club Golf Tournaments is governed by the following order of priority unless specifically modified and published for an event. a. Members may enter events more than 10 days in advance of the first round of a tournament. b. Spouses may enter events, either individually or as part of a team, if the field limit has not been reached 10 days in advance of the first round of a tournament. In this event, participation by a Spouse will not be limited or restricted based on the time or day of the scheduled round(s). For a complete set of the ANCC club rules, please click here . Are Your Clubs Ready for the Golf Season? When was the last time you had your clubs re-gripped? Eighteen months is the absolute maximum you should wait to change your grips because slick or worn grips can have a negative impact on your game, like driving on worn tires. Maintaining proper grip pressure is essential in making a smooth swing, but worn grips require tighter grip pressure which inhibits the swing. Worn grips are especially slippery in wet conditions. Degradation is gradual, so you may not even realize how worn they’ve gotten. Stop in either Golf Shop for more information or to have a Pro look at your grips. ANCC Golf Tournament Eligibility for 2017 ATTENTION: All golfers participating in ANCC golf tournaments (including all member-guest tournaments and mixed couples) are required to have an established USGA handicap with a minimum of 12 scores posted in the past 12 months to be eligible for the tournaments. Any guest playing in a member - guest tournament that did not have a verifiable USGA handicap was subject to playing from scratch.

Spring Kick-Off Golf Tournament The Spring Kick-Off Golf Tournament will be held on April 8 at Fairfax. This tournament is one of the favorite formats of the year. The field is limited to the first 42 teams entered. This event sells out quickly every year! For more information and to enter, click here .

LOW BACK PAIN PREVENTION TIP

Studies show that the majority of people in the U.S. report suffering from low back pain at some point in their lives. In most cases, low back pain is mild and short lived. This can result from movements/positions outside of normal movement patterns (i.e. raking leaves or shoveling snow). More severe and enduring low back pain can be the result of asymmetric, low amplitude, and repetitive strain placed on the lumbar spine or the musculature supporting it. Poor seated posture associated with deskbound occupations is one example. For others, low back pain can be an acute, debilitating situation requiring corticosteroids, medication or surgery. Often, pain at this level is due to a herniation in a lumbar disc, and subsequent pressure on lumbar nerve roots.

A general rule of thumb to help prevent low back pain from beginning is to keep your abdominals strong to stabilize the lumbar spine, and to keep your hamstrings stretched to prevent excessive pull on the pelvis. If you are experiencing low back pain, studies show that seeing a physical therapist within 14 days of onset will lead to the best outcomes and return to prior level of function. Appointments with a Doctor of Physical Therapy are available at the Fitness Center by clicking here .

Fort Richardson’s Signal Tower Did You Know? Fort Richardson’s primary mission during the Civil War was to serve as a principal fortification in the defense of Washington commanding the highest ground of all the Forts on the Virginia side. That advantage also proved to be an important link in a network of signal towers providing speedy communications between the other Forts and posts in Virginia and Washington. Shortly after Fort Richardson became operational, the newly established Signal Corps built a signal tower inside the enclosed Fort and probably about 125 feet in height. The tower provided a clear line of sight to the other towers in the chain of Forts. The signal corpsmen used a simple but effective flag waving communication method. At night, lanterns and torches substituted for the flags. Messages were received and retransmitted to the next Fort in line until received by the intended recipient. A signalman could transmit up to a paragraph in size within 13 minutes between one station and another via up to four relay stations in between. For more information on Fort Richardson and its signal tower and the ANCC Foundation’s efforts’ to publicize and memorialize Fort Richardson and other elements of the Club’s history, please click here . Membership

Dear Members and Friends, On April 25, 2017 at 1800, the Club will hold a Town Hall meeting regarding the proposed VDOT Sound Barrier project. As many of you know, the Club must advise VDOT whether VDOT should build a Sound Barrier on VDOT’s land that adjoins the Club property along I-395. VDOT has allocated several million dollars to build a Sound Barrier. There is no cost to the Club. The decision on whether to build the Sound Barrier, in whole or in part, along with the barrier’s composition, rests entirely with VDOT. VDOT will take our wishes into account when it makes its decision. The Board of Governors will decide the Club’s position at its June meeting. To consider this matter, we have arranged for VDOT representatives to brief the Membership at a Town Hall meeting. While VDOT can summarize its views at the Town Hall meeting, you can find additional information about the I-395 project in general, and with respect to the proposed Sound Barrier on VDOT’s website: www.virginiadot.org. To be clear, VDOT’s proposal is a one-time offer, and one that has both positive and negative consequences. If the Sound Barrier decision is important to you, you should review the available information, attend the Town Hall meeting, and communicate your views to those who serve on the Board of Governors before the Board’s June 28, 2017 meeting.

John C. Tuck CAPT, USNR, Retired Chairman, Board of Governors
