PMMI Prevails In Lawsuit Over Fraudulent Logo Use PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Process- ing Technologies, won a lawsuit against Data Market- ers Inc. doing business as LogiChannel for trademark infringement, false association advertising and unfair competition. LogiChannel was falsely positioning itself using the PACK EXPO logo and attempting to sell fake attendee lists. Without Permission PMMI filed a complaint against LogiChannel in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virgin- ia after discovering that the data and marketing ser- vices company had used the PACK EXPO logo without permission and otherwise misrepresented itself. Log- iChannel misleadingly claimed to have a false PACK EXPO attendee list for sale. Eastern District of Virginia Court, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis, III marked a clear victory for PACK EXPO and all trade show organizers, by signing an order on requiring Data Marketers, Inc. to permanently refrain from advertising, offering or selling any goods or ser- vices infringing upon all PACK EXPO logo designs and trademarks. The defendant was also ordered to pay damages and attorney’s fees.

Badger Tag & Label (Cont’d from Page 1) To address the company’s goal of reducing waste,Bad- ger instituted new procedures that include the use of a designated recycling dumpster for corrugated, paper trim and waste that is emptied and recycled six times annually and totals 252 yards of recycled material. Printer companies are surrounded by ways in which to reduce their environmental impact, but it takes a vigilant eye. With that in mind, Badger’s staff is on track to divert 3,000 pounds of single-use towels this year alone from landfills by introducing an initiative in which all of its printer rags are laun- dered for reuse. The company uses water-based inks in its flexo and digital presses to reduce the use of harsh solvents. Badger is 100 percent LED, focusing on the need to reduce energy consumption. At the original man- ufacturing plant, incandescent fixtures as well as T8 and T12 fluorescent fixtures were replaced with LED lights and, more recently, during construction of its new plant, LED lights were installed throughout the building. A new heating system complete with programmable thermostats and sensors were also added.

L9 World Label Association Presents Printing Awards The L9 World Label Association has announced the winners of the Best of the Best awards which were judged by an international panel of judges during La- belexpo 2019.

The awards would normally be presented to the winning companies during the Labelexpo Americas event in Chicago in September 2020. Because that event has been postponed until March 2021 it was decided that the awards would be presented by the appropriate “local” association rather than wait until next March. The winning label in the flexographic printing cat- egory was for Freakshow Chardonnay produced by Multi-Color Corporation North America Wine & Spir- its, USA.The combined use of gold ink and cold foil- ing creates a great framework for the central theme of the label. Corrugated, Folding Carton Market To Surpass $93.8B The overall U.S. corrugated and folding boxboard market was estimated at $74.5 billion in 2019 and is expected to hit $93.8 billion by 2026, registering a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 3.5 percent from 2020 to 2026, according to a new report published by Global Market Insights Inc. Corrugated and folding boxboards are being increas- ingly used in the packaging of homecare and personal care products, according to the report. The usage of these boxes is increasing in the home care industry for the packaging of toilet cleaners, kitchen utensils, and other products used on a daily basis. The rising demand for luxury personal care brands in the United States are anticipated to support the demand for home care as well as personal care products, thereby trigger- ing the U.S. corrugated and folding boxboard market growth in the region for packaging-based applications. Paper, Packaging Products Preferred By Consumers According to research shown in a series of down- loadable infographics offered by the Paper and Pack- aging Board (P+PB),paper and packaging products are

preferred by consumers and brands alike. Research data shows 64 percent of surveyed con- sumers agree that they think more highly of compa- nies that package their products in paper-based pack- aging, and 79 percent agree that even as technology becomes more advanced, paper continues to play an important role in daily life. This data, and many more statistics, are available as shareable infographics and found in the virtual sales toolkit P+PB has made available industry-wide. DS Smith Annual Profit Bolstered By E-Commerce Packaging firm DS Smith has reported a 5 percent rise in annual profit, bolstered by growing demand from e-commerce and consumer goods customers, but the company said it was too early to resume dividends in the short-term due to the pandemic. The company said the COVID-19 crisis had a £15 mil- lion impact in the last two months of its financial year as box volumes declined and industrial customers re- mained weak. The company, which makes cardboard boxes and re- cycled paper, reported an adjusted operating profit of £660 million, up from £631 million last year.

U.S. Ecommerce Will Rise 18 Percent Amid Pandemic After digital research company eMarketer released its February 2020 forecast projecting modest growth of 2.8 percent to $5.621 trillion in total U.S. retail sales, the coronavirus pandemic took the U.S. economy by storm, causing store closures, stay-at-home orders and declined demand for nonessential goods. As a result, the company now expects there to be a 10.5 percent decline in total U.S. retail sales this year, with a 14 percent drop in brick-and-mortar sales. But the news isn’t dire for all retail channels. Ecom- merce is poised to grow 18 percent following a 14.9 percent gain in 2019, further evidence of the digital shift. In the US Ecommerce 2020 report, eMarketer ex- plores new predictions that reflect the impact of the public health crisis and consider which trends are here to stay. Here are some key takeaways from the report:

• Ecommerce sales have been driven by a surge in click-and-collect, specifically curbside pickup, allow- ing U.S. consumers to make immediate purchases while minimizing human contact. eMarketer now ex- pect U.S. click-and-collect ecommerce sales to grow to $58.52 billion, up 60.4 percent from its initial forecast of 38.6 percent growth. • eMarketer’ s 18 percent growth forecast for U.S. (Cont’d on Page 10)

ecommerce in 2020 reflects a notable increase in both the number of digital buyers and the average spending per buyer. These gains reflect the pandemic’s impact on new buyers joining the online retail space, includ- ing 12.2 percent growth for those ages 65 and older. • In a pandemic economy, consumers have gravitated toward trusted and reliable retailers. As a result, eMar- keter expects the top 10 ecommerce retail businesses to grow at above average rates (21.8 percent).Amazon will gain U.S. ecommerce market share this year, while Walmart’s accelerating ecommerce growth will take it to the No. 2 position for the first time. • Some of the extreme channel-shifting in Q2 2020 will subside over the course of the year as stores re- open and lockdowns end countrywide. However, cer- tain behaviors like click-and-collect and curbside pick- up will persist and suggest a long-term trajectory of ecommerce growth. White Paper Reveals Four Pillars To Sustainability Flint Group Packaging Inks has identified four strate- gic pillars key to successfully achieving its sustainabil- ity ambitions. Outlined in a new whitepaper, the four pillars set out a program of objectives and milestones that align with the company’s vision of realizing a truly circular economy within the packaging industry. The four pillars include Ethical Management, Re- duced Ecological Impact, Responsibly Built Products and Designing for Circularity. Setting out a clear framework for global compa- ny-wide development, the Ethical Management pillar incorporates a range of audits and standards that Flint Group Packaging Inks has implemented for both the company and its suppliers to adhere to. In addition, it details new policies which are needed and that address human rights, anti-discrimination, green engineering and waste management, as well as anti-corruption and equal opportunities practices. Reduced Ecological Impact includes a program of targets for the business to meet in relation to ener- gy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and landfill waste. It also outlines Flint

Group Packaging Inks’ commitment to achieving ISO14001, the international standard for an effective environmental management system. The XtraMile pro- gram, an initiative to help printers boost connectivity, reduce waste and drive operational efficiency, is also incorporated. The third pillar of Flint Group’s sustainability strate- gy, Responsibly Built Products, addresses the building blocks of ink formulation, regulatory compliance and the environmental impact associated with their use. The fourth strategic pillar addresses the design of inks and coatings for the circular economy in support of the development of fully recyclable packaging solu- tions with minimal waste creation. By working closely with the recycling industry, the company is develop- ing inks that are easier to recycle, including new wa- ter-based and lowVOC inks. Sun Chemical Acquires Sensient Imaging Sun Chemical and its parent company, DIC Corpora- tion, have completed the purchase of 100 percent of the shares of Sensient Imaging Technologies.
