What was your first job after college: Once I graduated from college, I was accepted into the Metro Nashville Police Academy and endured 20 weeks of intense training. So, my first job was becoming a Police Officer. Is there a difference between a Sheriff Deputy and a Police Officer? No, both do the same thing, enforcing all the laws and protecting citizens. A Sheriff is the same as a Police Chief in that he or she is the head of the department they work for. The Sheriff is elected into office by citizens where a Police Chief is appointed by a Mayor. What is it like to be a Police Officer? It is a very rewarding job, as I have said earlier, being able to help people. That is not to say it is not difficult at times. Police Officers have to make in some cases, split second decisions. Without proper training, decisions like this can be devastating. It is through proper and continuing training that officers make the best call in any given situation. In the worst cases when a tragic outome results, the officer’s actions are thoroughly investigated, anaylzed, and scrutinized. Nothing he does is taken lightly. How much training does a Police Officer need? Both Sheriff Deputies and Police

Officers have to start out in a Law Enforement Academy. After they graduate months later, they continue their training ranging from 40 to 120 hours each year until they retire. Many train for special assignments like Investigator, CIS, SWAT, Traffic Accident Investigation, etc. What is the coolest thing about being a Sheriff? I get to help people! We help change lives for the better and keep people safe. One of the first things a kid asks me is, “Have you ever shot anyone?” That always makes me take a step back and reflect upon why I do this job. It is about enforcing our laws and helping people have better lives and to become better citizens. How do you feel about how the public perceives Police Officers around the country? There seems to be a movement of a lack of support from our

that police officer handled that situation made me want to be just like him. Then, there was a 3rd time encounter when I was in middle school. My father had a friend who was a homicide detective whom I saw on TV!. He was my hero! I thought to myself, “Boy, he has got it together.” This detective took a special interest in me and encouraged me to go to college.” Sheriff Breedlove has some pretty awesome paintings in his office!
