GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Spring track and field season got off to a good start for Russell High School. Coach Gord Zubyk reported several new school records set in track and field, following results of the Dome Series of indoor meets at the Louis Riel Sports Dome in Orléans, including four by Lauren Maxwell in Grade 7 girls 80- and 100-metre sprints, and the long and high jump events. “She’s doing very well,” said Zubyk. Adding that Maxwell is also a member of the Grade 8 girls 4x100-metre relay team, which set a new school record this year. Two other new individual school records in track and field were set, one by Aiden Wade in Grade 7 boys 80-metre sprint and the other by long-distance runner Evan Jaque- ment in the Grade 7 3000-metre. This year’s Timberwolves track and field team numbers about two dozen athletes, including veterans from past seasons like Daniel Kreft, who finished sixth in midget boys’ 100-metre hurdles at last year’s Eas- tern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Asso- ciations (EOSSAA) championship meet, and Jacob Hill, who finished 15th in the province last year, in midget division cross-country at the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletic Associations meet. “He has done well so far,” added Zubyk, about Kreft’s performance so far this season. “He pretty much runs the same time as he did last year. Hill has marked school records in 800, 1500 and the 3000.” Another Russell High athlete to watch this track-and-field season, Zubyk noted, is Owen Johnson, a Grade 9 student competing in the hurdles, who won all three of his events during his last Dome competition. “The hurdles is new for him,” mentioned Zubyk, “and he’s doing fairly well.” Another hurdler doing well in her event is Cassidy Porteous, who won her event in the midget girls 300-metre hurdles and also raced to first place in the 800-metre and 1500-metre long-distance running events. The next regular meets on the spring track season for Russell High’s Timberwolves were May 14 and May 23 and 24. Russell High also hosted this year a joint elementary school track and field meet May 16, featuring competitors from Russell Public School and Cambridge Elementary School. Russell High will also host the Upper Canada Cup Eastern Regional meet, May 28, for track teams from schools in the Upper Canada District School Board region.
