Officers from the Russell detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were kept busy from April 29 to May 5, as they responded to 373 calls for assistance. On April 29, at about 5:30 p.m., an officer responded to a shoplifting complaint at a gas station on Principale Street in Casselman. Russell Township has a new holiday shopping bylaw. Again. Township council approved the bylaw during its May 6 public session. Plus de 900 personnes n’ont pas man- qué l’occasion de voir le Carrousel de la Gendarmerie royale du Canada, dimanche dernier, à Saint-Albert. « C’est tellement beau, j’en ai des fris- sons. » Voilà une déclaration d’une specta- trice qui traduisait sans doute le sentiment qui habitait une majorité des spectateurs lorsque les chevaux noirs et leurs cavaliers ont fait leur entrée sur les terrains de la Fromagerie Saint-Albert. Ils se sont placés en haie d’honneur pour saluer l’invité spécial, TPJUMFNBJSFEF-B/BUJPO'SBOÉPJT4U"NPVS L’officier responsable du Carrousel, Kevin Fahy, lui a adressé quelques mots avant de commencer. Pendant une bonne quarantaine de minutes, les spectateurs se sont laissés émerveiller devant l’agilité équestre des cavaliers. Ces derniers ont également fait des démonstrations de manœuvres. Le Carrousel de la GRC est composé de 32 cavaliers et de leur monture. Il s›agit d›un spectacle qui comprend des figures complexes et des exercices chorégraphiés exécutés au son de la musique francophone et anglophone. Tickets are available at The Leading Note, Compact Music and Books on Beechwood and by contacting info@ thirteenstrings.ca. – Francis Racine HERITAGE FOREST STUDY The United Counties of Prescott-Rus- sell (UCPR) and the United Counties of Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry (UCSDG) are partnering on having heritage forest studies done, as part of their future Official Plan (OP) reviews, and also to update their land use profiles. They will contract with the South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) to do the studies, since natural heritage is part of the SNC mandate. The UCPR planning and forestry department will provide counties council with the final report on the study proposal for review and approval at an upcoming UCPR session. – Gregg Chamberlain

La 10 e et toute dernière marche des hommes en talons haut s’est déroulée sous la pluie dans les rues de Casselman, jeudi dernier. Mais cela n’aura pas empêché les 95 participants de rendre hommage à cette activité qui laissera désormais sa place à de nouvelles. Anne Jutras, directrice générale de Novas-CALACS francophone de Prescott-Russell, s’est dit tout de même heureuse de voir que cette marche, qui avait pour but de sensibiliser les gens aux violences à caractère sexuel, ait pu attiré pendant 10 ans des milliers d’hommes qui ont pris d’assaut les rues. Cette activité a servi de collecte de fonds et, cette année, ce sont 3000 $ qui ont été amassés. UNE COLLECTE DE FONDS
Les Chevaliers de Colomb de Casselman, conseil 3349, ont fait des heureux la semaine dernière. Ils ont donné un chèque de 506 $ aux pompiers volontaires de Casselman, afin de les aider à acheter une caméra thermique qui leur permettra de retrouver des victimes dans une épaisse fumée, lors d’un incendie. C’est grâce au 50/50 du 14 avril dernier que les Chevaliers de Colomb ont pu remettre le chèque en mains propres au chef pompier Alain Ménard que l’on voit ici, au centre. Le 11 mai dernier, l’Association des Jeux des aînés et aînées de l’Ontario, district 8, a organisé son tournoi de quilles à la Salle de quilles d’Embrun. L’équipe d’Embrun a remporté, pour la deuxième année consécutive, la médaille d’or, et représentera le district 8 aux jeux d’été régionaux de l’Ontario, qui se tiendront le 15 août prochain à Carleton Place.
