BEATING THE FLORIDA HEAT

A lot of people are getting ready for Florida’s summer weather. For some, that means taking some time off and heading out on vacation. For others, it means finding ways to beat the heat a little closer to home. For myself, you can count me among the latter. Our family doesn’t typically take a vacation or anything quite like that. This year, we do have some end-of-summer plans to head up to Virginia for a family reunion on my wife’s side. Other than that, we’ll be sticking closer to home. It is always good to get away when we can, though, and take a break from the heat and humidity, especially later in the summer. Of course, living in Florida, there’s no shortage of things to do. That’s one of the benefits of living in a seasonal tourist hotspot. People from all over the country and all over the world flock to Florida in the summer to take advantage of our many attractions, but living in the state means we have access to some pretty nice deals and discounts, so in many ways, it can pay to stick around. We do try to get to Disney World about once a year, though not necessarily in the summer. Standing in line in the heat is not my definition of a good time. But a trip to the Disney parks is always a welcome one. It’s been a lot of fun to go with our daughter, who is becoming more and more familiar with the world of Disney. When we do take her to the parks, she is more aware each time of what’s going on around her, and she really takes it all in. It’s great to try out different rides and attractions to see what she likes. She can’t get enough of the Nemo or the Frozen rides at Epcot. Then there is the Dumbo ride, which she finds absolutely thrilling. The last time we went, she got the chance to drive Dumbo, which made her day.

indoors and hang out (with the air conditioner keeping us comfortable). It’s a time for a hibernation of sorts: watching movies, sipping on cold drinks, and doing what we can to stay cool — especially on those days when it’s too hot even for a swim. When it comes down to it, though, I would gladly take three months of heat in the summer as opposed to six months of what feels like unending winter in the north where I grew up. As much as the heat can get to you, it doesn’t quite compare to several months of snowy, rainy, and cloudy weather that seems to follow you around wherever you go. And Florida may be hot in the summer, but you’ll never end up with a vitamin D deficiency, that’s for sure.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Unconventional Summer Jobs for Teens

I was hit by another person and went to the hospital. I can’t afford to pay for my hospital bills, or further treatment. What do I do? COMMON QUESTIONS FOR CRIMINAL DEFENSE SITUATIONS Currently, Florida is PIP state. If you have PIP insurance, your insurance will cover the $10,000.00* of your medical bills from an accident. If you have outstanding medical bills beyond your PIP coverage, you can seek compensation from the party who injured you. You may be able to seek damages for past and future pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, future medical bills, and mental suffering. Please contact the Law Office of Matthew Konecky, P.A., to see how we can help you. As your teen becomes more independent, they may be interested in getting a summer job. Whether they want to save up for a big purchase or just have some extra spending money, summer jobs can solidify the importance of hard work and responsibility for your child. Plus, the earlier your teen starts, the sooner they can learn how to manage their money. Fast-food restaurants and clothing stores are popular first jobs, but encourage your teen to think outside the box and try one of these creative money-making opportunities. Online Surveys and Reviews Companies are eager for consumer feedback, and they are willing to pay for it. Sites like Swagbucks and MySurvey offer members the opportunity to complete tasks like taking surveys, writing reviews, and watching videos to redeem rewards in the form of cash or gift cards. Teens can also preview up-and-coming music as reviewers on Slice the Pie. Sites like these require quite a bit of work for a relatively small wage, but they can be the perfect first job for a child who wants to try earning a few bucks for the first time. Teens under the age of 18 will require parental consent. Virtual Storefronts If your child has a flare for arts, crafts, or anything else DIY, encourage them to set up an Etsy shop. There are no

Right now, I am offering my two resource books for free. “One Bad Night” membership fees, and after Etsy’s 3.5 percent cut, sellers receive their profits via PayPal. Minors age 13–17 must have a parent or legal guardian manage their Etsy account. Petsitting and Housesitting If your teen is trustworthy and responsible, there’s no reason they can’t work for neighbors, friends, and family. Most professional petsitting and housesitting services require their sitters to be over 18, but Care.com allows teens 14–17 to register as “Teen Providers” with parental consent. Depending on where you live and how much experience your teen has, they can expect to earn $15–30 per visit, and they may be able to ask for more to stay overnight. Help your teen get the word out by posting on social media. Most importantly, keep your teen safe by helping them screen clients and teaching them what information to share. Summer jobs are a great way for teens to earn extra cash and learn responsibility. The next time your teen asks you for money to go to the movies, encourage them to earn some spending cash of their own. Who knows? They might actually treat you to a movie sometime!

SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT MEET JARROD ANDERSON: Black Belt Instructor and Co-owner of Gamblers Jiu-Jitsu & Kickboxing Club

Ashley Glasser-Konecky and Jarrod Anderson

What has been your biggest athletic achievement to date? Receiving my black belt after nine years of training from Professor Joao Faria.

Gamblers Jiu-Jitsu and Kickboxing Club in Palm Beach Gardens is a place to learn from the best while boosting your body, mind, and soul. In this month’s Small Business Spotlight, we are honored to feature Jarrod Anderson, head black belt instructor and co-owner of Gamblers. Our very own Ashley Glasser-Konecky, a student at Gamblers Jiu-Jitsu, interviewed Jarrod this month and here is what he had to say. What is your background in martial arts? I was always intrigued by the martial arts and was fortunate to have a father who trained in various styles of martial arts to teach me the basics of self-defense. Once UFC started to get popular, I became interested in learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu and started doing just that. What inspired you to start your own business/studio? I don’t come from the best past and jiu-jitsu changed my life. It taught me the importance of discipline, respect, humility, and perseverance. After realizing the benefits of jiu-jitsu, I wanted to share this amazing martial art with as many people as possible to make a difference in their lives. My mentor, brother, and friend, Mike Ciprianni, made it possible with Gamblers Jiu-Jitsu Club. What sets you apart from other trainers and studios? We have an open-minded approach to training and believe in bringing in the highest quality instructors to teach our students. We have had multiple world champions of jiu- jitsu, including Talita Alencar, Leo Santos, Joao Assis, Amanda Alequin, and Joao Faria, at our academy helping improve our students and instructors.

What has been your biggest challenge? Life is constantly challenging us. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs throughout my life, but jiu-jitsu taught me that it doesn’t matter what happens to you. It matters how you respond to what happens to you. Where do you see yourself and Gamblers in the future? Gamblers grows daily. Mike Ciprianni has a lot of big plans for our academy. I want to continue improving myself and my students through jiu-jitsu. IS MOVIE PASS RIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY?

Superheroes, robots, and dinosaurs, oh my! The 2018 blockbuster season is in full swing, and chances are your kids don’t want to miss out on the action. But these days, going to the movies costs an arm and a leg — and that’s before you buy the popcorn. One service is looking to change this. If you’ve watched the news at all in the last year, chances are you’ve heard the buzz about Movie Pass. It’s a subscription service in which one user pays $9.95 a month in exchange for four free movie tickets each month at participating theaters. While initially envisioned for college students and film aficionados, could Movie Pass be right for your family? Where Do You Live? The first thing you should do when considering whether to sign up for the pass is research which theaters in your area take the pass and which don’t. If you have to make a long drive just to get to a participating theater, it’s probably not worth subscribing. Are You a Movie Family? Do you go to the movies often as a family? Or do you and your spouse need more date-night options? With the $9.95 monthly subscription fee, as long as the pass holder in your family

sees more than one movie a month, you are saving money. This can be a great encouragement to see more films, whether as a family or individually. Is 3D a Must? The one catch of Movie Pass is that it will only get you into standard 2D movies. If you and the family want the 3D experience, you’ll have to pay for it separately. If enough theaters in your area participate, your family enjoys going to the movies, and you’re not set on seeing 3D movies, Movie Pass can be a great investment. But if the answer is no to any of these questions, you’re probably better off just buying tickets at the box office.
