Since 1981, October has been considered National Adopt a Shelter Dog

through a local shelter’s Facebook page one day when she saw a dog that she thought looked a lot like Hershey. Of course, when she discovered videos of the same cute pup, she got glued to the screen and watched about 40 of them. Right away, I knew I was in trouble. I was against having a second dog, but Marah wheedled her way until I went with her to the shelter to meet Rock. We played outside with him for a bit, then took him back into the shelter. The moment we sat down, he hopped right up and laid across both our laps. The lady working at the shelter told us we could take him home “just for the day,” and, well, here we are four years later.

Month, and there’s a good chance the designation has helped thousands of pups across the country find

homes. In the spirit of the holiday, I thought I’d share a bit about my own rescue dogs, Hershey and Rock, who have changed my life for the better since they showed up unexpectedly years ago.

“The moment we sat down, he hopped right up and laid across both our laps. The lady working at the shelter told us we could take him home 'just for the day,' and, well, here we are four years later.”

Hershey was the first to crash-land into my life, and I actually have Chiro1Source to thank for bringing us together. One morning in 2013, my stepmom Julie — who happens to work in our office — found Hershey huddled outside of the Chiro1Source building. He was still a puppy then, and he was in bad shape, skinny and hungry. Julie scooped him up and took a photo of his cute little

Though they look a bit alike, Hershey acts like a Lab mix, while Rock has the mannerisms of a boxer. Hershey loves to bark at everything, and he’s all about gobbling up treats and chasing tennis balls. We call him the “Chief Treat Inspector,” while Rock is the “Chief Security Officer.” Rock is the more protective of the two, but he’s also the sweeter one. He thinks he’s a big lap dog even though he weighs 75 pounds, and he loves to take up half of Marah’s and my bed every night while Hershey curls up politely in his own little bed to sleep. I bring both dogs to work with me every day, and they have their very own couches to hang out on. Everyone loves them, and they’re so spoiled that we joke about them being our unofficial office mascots. They’ve even picked up some office-specific tricks! Karen, my mother- in-law, trained them to run to their treat box every time they hear the whistle of the train going by. I think I’m beyond lucky to spend every day with Hershey and Rock, and I know Marah feels the same way. One of the most wonderful things about dogs is they live in the moment, and I think I’ve learned to be better at that just from watching them. I heard somewhere that even though dogs only live 10–12 years, the amount of time they spend living in the present is probably greater than what most of us humans manage in our long lives, and I certainly believe it. If you’re considering getting a dog, now is the time to head down to your local shelter. You won’t regret it for a minute.

Labrador face. She sent it to me along with a message that said to bring a leash, collar, and some food

to work. We met that morning, and Hershey has been part of the family ever since! When we adopted him, he was

only 25 pounds, and the vet told us he wouldn’t grow past 40 — clearly the joke is on me, though, because today he’s a giant 80-pound goofball. Two years after we adopted Hershey, Facebook brought us Rock. Marah, my wife, was scrolling

CAN YOGA IMPROVE YOUR BASKETBALL GAME?

THA

NBA Players Say Yes

Meet Karen, t

We all know that ballet is the secret behind many NFL players’ footwork skills, but did you know that yoga can offer similar game upgrades to basketball players? Fitness experts agree that if you’re trying to get better at shooting hoops, then you can benefit from regular yoga sessions. According to yoga instructor Karla Tafra, there are multiple payoffs to adding stretches like Crescent Lung, Tree Pose, Bridge Pose, and Warrior 2 to your exercise arsenal.  “Basketball is extremely fast-paced, with lots of jumps, twists, turns, coordination, and sprints that take a huge toll on the joints and tendons,” Tafra told BodyBuilding.com. “Keeping them flexible and strong prevents injuries and aids recovery.”  According to STACK, many of today’s top players are already well aware of the protective powers of yoga. NBA stars like Blake Griffin, Kevin Love, and LeBron James all regularly bend themselves into pretzels to improve their game. Love integrates an hour of yoga into his workouts two or three times each week.

On Oct. 1, 1908, Henry Ford’s Model T went on sale, blowing the doors off of the American auto industry and changing the way we drive — and work — for good. The latter came about because, in order to make the Model T, Ford created the assembly line system, a division-of-labor approach that went on to dominate manufacturing the world over.

"Yoga teaches stretching, strengthening, and breathing, and it helps you get in tune with your body. That helps in basketball, or in any sport, really,” Love’s yoga instructor, Kent Katich, told STACK. As a former basketball player himself, Katich is intimately familiar with the sport and claims that even a couple of minutes of yoga can help in a pinch.

"It's not about doing an hour of yoga every day," he said. "It's about how you feel and what you need right now."

Some yoga poses are known for building strength, while others can improve flexibility, ease sore muscles, elongate the spine, and even reduce stress. Combined into an hourlong practice over weeks, months, or years, these yoga poses can make a player lighter on their feet, quicker to duck or dive, more graceful with their reach, and more relaxed.  If you’re still in doubt, take it straight from All-Star LeBron James, who has broken dozens of records on the court and is considered by many to be this generation’s greatest player.

James told The Plain Dealer, “Yoga isn't just about the body; it's also about the mind, and it's a technique that has really helped me.”

In honor of Ford’s genius, we want to take a minute this month to recognize one of the systems in place at our own office we’ve found invaluable, and the wonderful employee who came up with it: Karen Sparrow. Karen has been a member of our team since January 2018, and has more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry, which makes her a real asset to our company. She’s also the one who started the practice of writing handwritten thank-you notes and inspirational messages on every packaging list we send out. Thank-you notes are a lost art that should be much more common, and we love that Karen has put a system in place to ensure they always go out to our customers. Not only does Karen enjoy writing the notes, but we’ve also heard from clients that they love receiving them. One company cuts out the handwritten messages each month and pins them to a bulletin board, and we’ve even had customers going through difficult times call to tell us the words of encouragement brought them to tears. A kind phrase, even one that runs just four to 10 words, can really make a difference. NK-YOU TO THE K-YOU MASTER e Hero Behind the Packing List Thank-You Notes

How to Update Your Topical Selection With Products Your Patients Will Love THE TOPICAL TEST RUN This summer, Chiro1Source Owner Josh Walker sat down with Dr. Steven Weiniger to talk topicals. Dr. Weiniger is the author, speaker, and all-around posture guru behind PosturePractice.com, and he had plenty of insider tips to pass on for clinics stuck in a topical rut. Here’s a rundown of one of his favorite methods your clinic can use to craft a topical selection your patients will love. The backbone of this strategy is what Dr. Weiniger calls the clinical approach. Basically, rather than following the usual doctor’s office model of seeing a patient and giving specific instructions on which type of topical cream to use, Dr. Weiniger suggests you offer patients multiple options. Give the patient two or three samples with instructions to try one today, another tomorrow, and the last on day three, and ask them to come back into the office with feedback on what worked best. In our years of working with clinics across the country, one of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that when it comes to doing business, the client’s opinion is always right. Here at Chiro1Source, sometimes we fall in love with a product before we figure out whether the market wants it. The same thing can happen in clinics: Just because you love a product doesn’t mean it will suit your patients best. Dr. Weiniger’s approach involves the patient in the decision, giving them more control over their health. Everyone’s body is different and responds differently to treatment, so it’s wise to take any steps you can to make your treatment more personalized. Plus, if you use Dr. Weiniger’s method with multiple patients, you’ll be able to get a good idea of which topicals work best overall. If everyone likes one or two of the creams you’ve sent out, then it’s a good bet stocking those will lead to increased sales down the road.

Karen’s gesture is a beautiful example of our overall ethos at Chiro1Source, which is to always treat our clients as people, never as numbers. If you order from us, we’ll offer you devoted one-on-one attention whether you’re buying for one clinic or 20 — and you’ll get to enjoy Karen’s thank-you notes to boot! Check out our next edition to learn about another system that Julie has put in place for all our new clients.

If you want to get started today, head to Chiro1Source.com to check out our selection of topicals from brands like Stopain, CBD Clinic, and Biofreeze, which is on sale through the end of October!

Business Card Etiquette in 3 Different Countries PUT YOUR BEST CARD FORWARD

China In China, as in many other countries, having your credentials and contact info in English on one side and in the local language on the other is good practice. Gold lettering is considered auspicious, and if your business is relatively old, make sure the year it was founded is on your card. The practice of giving and receiving cards is very similar to that of Japan. Finish the exchange with a bow as a way to thank your acquaintance for meeting with you.  India   Business cards are exchanged even in nonbusiness interactions in India. Much like hierarchy and status are valued in Japan, academic achievements are valued in India, so list your university, degrees, and honors along with your other information. When exchanging cards, always give and receive them with your right hand. This is also common practice in many Middle Eastern countries.  Exchanging business cards the wrong way probably won’t be detrimental to your business deal, but learning the proper etiquette in the country you’re visiting can go a long way in starting a professional relationship on the right foot.

The business card is a nearly ubiquitous way to give your name, position, company, and contact information to

potential clients and business partners all over the world. And while the exchange of business cards in the United States does not come with a lot of pomp and circumstance, that is not the case in many other countries. If you find yourself in one of the following places, remember these tips about exchanging business cards. Japan Known in Japan as meishi , the exchange of business cards comes with a lot of ceremony. Present your card with both hands, as this gesture is seen as respectful. Japanese culture places a lot of value on hierarchy and status, so make sure your title is listed prominently. When receiving a card, take a minute to look it over and comment on it. Immediately putting it away is disrespectful, and once you’re done looking at it, put it in a cardholder, folder, or binder.
