The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body “Find The Source Of Your Back Pain!” HERNIATED DISCS

The bones in your spine are called the vertebrae. The vertebrae are held together and in place by ligaments and small discs that act as shock absorbers. These control the spine’s range of cord safe from damage. However, when a disc is damaged, the inside of the disc can slip out of its place and either bulge or herniate, leaving the spinal joints susceptible to damage. When this occurs, the result is called a “herniated disc”, as well as a “slipped” or “ruptured disc.” Bulging discs are the beginning phase of herniated discs. Very often people have a bulging disc and don’t even know it. Only when the outside of a bulging disc becomes irritated and affects the surrounding tissue does it begin to cause localized pain. With the passage of time,

a disc problem can advance and contribute to arm or leg pain depending if the problem is in the neck or back. A herniated disc can be incredibly painful thus hindering a person’s mobility and overall ability to perform day-to-day tasks. Often there is a local mechanical problem in the spine contributing to disc and joint strain, or the body may be compensating, sometimes long term, with faulty movement strategies as we attempt to accomplish our daily routines. These underlying problems persist until appropriate intervention can correct these ingrained patterns. If you or someone you knowmay need relief from a herniated disc, schedule an appointment by calling our office at 770-622-5344 or visit www.johnscreekpt.com.

CONGRATULATIONS, KATE UY! “A Proud Accomplishment At Johns Creek PT!”

For those of you who have come into the clinic in the past two years, you have probably had a chance to meet or work with our Rehab Technician, Kate Uy. If you spent any time at all talking with Kate you would have learned that she was working on getting into physical therapy school. With a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Georgia, she began working at Johns Creek Physical Therapy in January 2016. After applying for the 2016/2017 school year, she was placed on the waiting list at a handful of schools but unfortunately, never got accepted. Not to be denied, she

spent last year taking extra classes, studying and retaking the GRE, and shadowing with other physical therapists in other specialties, Kate reapplied for the 2018 class at a variety of programs. After interviewing at multiple schools, Kate was accepted into Emory University as well as Long Island University in New York. Kate is choosing to stay in Georgia and will attend Emory University this summer. If you are able to stop in the clinic before she leaves, please stop in and wish her well. We will all miss her dedication, enthusiasm, and work ethic in the clinic.
