Surveys Shed Light On Flexo’s Future

FINAT Plans To Resume Events FINAT, which was one of the first to reschedule its events due to COVID-19 is getting ready to open up again. FINAT has provisionally scheduled its next two international events for December 2-4, 2020, (the Technical Seminar) and June 2-4, 2021 (the Eu- ropean Label Forum). Due to a spe- cial COVID-19 arrangement, both events will take place in Barcelona. The European Label Forum 2022 will be held in Rome (the original venue for this year’s “ELF”),with exact dates to be announced. In planning the dates for these events, FINAT has been in close con- tact with its longstanding partner Tarsus. “For FINAT, 2021 is another Labelexpo Europe year,” said show organizers,“but especially in the first half of 2021, there will be a lot of competition for our events from ex- hibitions like Interpack in February, Labelexpo Americas in March, and drupa in April, all rescheduled from 2020.Of course, Labelexpo is the em- bedded label industry expo and its international flagship is Labelexpo

A s the economy continues to claw its way back from the ef- fects of the COVID-19 pandemic, newly published data from various sources sheds some light on the road ahead.

In a hopeful sign, Capstone Headwaters released its Industrials & Manufactur- ing Update, reporting

that after a three month decline that brought United States manu- facturing activity to its lowest level since the Global Financial Crisis, the industry showed signs of slight recovery in May and June. Additionally, the Commerce Department reported last week that retail sales rose 7.5 percent in June.

That was on top of the 18.2 percent jump in May. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast retail sales advancing 5 percent in June. In terms of the flexo industry, a new study from Persistence Market Research suggests that, globally, the production of flexo- graphic printing machines is growing, supported by the demand from countries in APECJ, North America, and Europe. Developments in flexographic printing machines, such as auto- mation and production of consumer goods and newspapers are the key driving force behind the growing installation of latest

Green Bay Packaging Receives APR Recognition Green Bay Packaging Inc., Coated Products Opera- tions received The Association of Plastic Recyclers’ (APR) Critical Guidance Recognition for two new pressure-sensitive label stocks. These label materials are part of Green Bay Packaging’s, GreenCycle prod- uct line. The two label structures are 1.85 mil clear and 2.4 mil white BOPP films combined with the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recyclable adhesive, 776S. These GreenCycle label structures reportedly completely wash off from PET containers during recycling. This results in a cleaner PET flake for future use in recycled content products. The APR Critical Guidance Recognition is presented to those innovators that have developed new products and technology that are compatible with recycling. To qualify for the recognition, Green Bay Packaging’s GreenCycle™ label structures passed two different rounds of testing; one with the label stocks on PET clamshells, the other with PET bottles. This testing simulated the conditions that take place in the actual recycling process. During recycling the PET is washed, and when APR Critical Guidance Rec- ognized label materials are used the adhesive removes

cleanly from the PET. In the wash the BOPP labels float and the PET sinks. That sink/float method allows the la- bels, with the adhesive, to be easily removed from the PET flake. This results in a higher quality and greater yield of clean PET flake. FlexoPrint Group Becomes Part Of Optimum Group The FlexoPrint Group, a producer of self-adhesive la- bels has become part of the Optimum Group. The Flex- oPrint Group consists of FlexoPrint in Randers, Den- mark, and H&T Labelprint, a merger of H&P Etiketten andTOM Etiketten, in Salzbergen and Greven,Germany. COVID-19’s To Have Lasting Impact On Consumer Behavior Research fromAMC Global concerning the impact of COVID-19 on long-lasting consumer behavior suggest that new purchasing trends and behavior shifts will continue after the pandemic. Many Americans have purchased outside of their typ- ical brands recently—with newly experienced food brands likely to see the most continued purchases in the future. The study also looked at various behav- iors during the pandemic and found that consumers expect to continue the trend of eating home-cooked meals and eating healthier. During the pandemic, 60 percent of consumers pur- chased food brands not typically used before — only 21 percent predict they will return exclusively to their original food brand; 54 percent tried something new for cleaning with 33 percent planning to return exclu- sively to their original cleaning brands. Many expect the future to include a mix of both newly tried and usual brands after COVID-19 (72 percent food, 55 per- cent cleaning). Consumers predict that some changes in behavior will continue after the pandemic is considered over. Seventy-three percent expect to continue eating more home cooked meals, and 62 percent expect to con- tinue improving cooking skills and eating more fresh ingredients. Only 22 percent predict that increased “pandemic snacking”will continue.

To accommodate different time zones of visitors, the Virtual expo was held live three times a day. Filmed in the 120,000-square-foot W&HTechnology Center in Lengerich, Germany, and the W&H Academy, two live machine demonstrations and eight technical sessions were broadcast live. In addition, the expo offered the opportunity for one-on-one meetings and both individ- ual and group chats. The live machine demonstrations included the NO- VOFLEX II flexographic press highlighting the new RUBY IoT system for analyzing production data to optimize processes and the newly redesigned HELIO- STAR II gravure printing press.

The charges include breach of contract, account stated and conversion. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages and other forms of relief. Headquartered in Los Alamitos, California, the defen- dant is a national printer serving magazine, catalog, direct mail and retail advertising segments, whose ser- vices include prepress, press, finishing and mail and distribution of printed materials (sale circulars and printed inserts). This action arises out ofTrend’s breach of this supply agreement whereby Flint Group provided Trend with inks, flat blankets, sleeves, fountain solutions, web con- ditions and press washes. The current balance owing on Trend’s account with Flint Group is nearly $4 mil- lion. The substantive actions leading to the claims in the complaint pre-date the COVID-19 crisis.
