We might think that everyone would have believed upon the Son of God. There were many who were angry with His teachings and who despised His miracles. The Lord Jesus re buked the Pharisees and other groups because they were not truly loving God and helping with His work. Today there are many people who refuse to receive the Lord Jesus as their Saviour even though they can see His power to save in many lives around about them. Do you have love for them and pray for them and en deavor to win them for Him before He comes again? Feb 18, 1951 JESUS THE CHRIST Mark 8:27-37 Pointers on the Lesson A crisis in the Lord’s ministry was Peter’s confession of Jesus as the Christ. Any view of Christ that con siders Him to be less than the Son of God—God manifest in the flesh—- is entirely inadequate. The Apostle Peter, speaking by the revelation of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 16:17), made the proper confession of faith. Every true Christian will be glad to make such a confession. He will also be happy to exclaim with Thomas in His presence, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). The teacher’s respon sibility in this lesson will be to make clear who Christ is and to press home His claims upon the individual life. The First Question of Jesus Mark 8:27 Somewhere in the region of the an cient town of Caesarea Philippi, lo cated at the foot of Mt. Hermon where one of the most copious branches of the Jordan rises, Jesus took His dis- • ciples that He might have an impor tant interview with them. In the course of the interview Jesus asked them a question, “Whom do men say that I am?” in order to lead up to another of a more specific nature. The First Answer of the Disciples Mark 8:28 Men were saying various things about Chr ist. Some, like Herod, thought He was John the Baptist risen from the dead. Others, mindful of Malachi 4:5, thought He must be Elijah. Still others conceived of Him as just another prophet like Isaiah or Jeremiah who had appeared at this later time. These opinions were all high, opinions it should be noted, but not nearly high enough. They all failed to make Him more than a great man. And no man, however great, can save men from sin and lift them to |Heaven.

The main concern of Jesus was the attitude of the disciples. They were the ones vested with the responsibility of bearing His name to the unsaved world. Then, too, Jesus would empha size the importance of a right per sonal faith in Him. It is not enough to know what others think of Christ. “What think ye of Christ?” (Matt. 22:42) is the vital question for each individual to answer. The Second Answer of the Disciples Mark 8:29b Peter became the spokesman for the Twelve at this juncture and made answer to Jesus’ direct question, saying, “ Thou art the Christ.” The full form of the confession is found in Matthew 16:16. But Mark’s brief form really contains the full idea, for Jesus could never have answered to the Old Testament prophetic concep tion of the coming Messiah without being deity. Make sure that each one in your class knows Jesus both as God and Saviour. Instruction as to the Future Mark 8:30-37 Christ first instructs His disciples concerning Himself and the necessity of His coming death (w . 30-33). It “must” be that He should suffer. The immaturity of the disciples’ concep tion of Christ’s ministry is seen in Peter’s attitude toward Christ’s proph ecy of His death. Jesus rebuked Peter for his expressed attitude and showed them all that the thought of evading the Cross was born of the devil. Let us forever remember this, that any way o f salvation that obliterates the Cross is an invention of Satan and will end in tragedy. Then Christ gave instruction con cerning the true meaning of disciple- ship (w . 34-37). “ A man carrying a cross was a man going out to die.” And so this business of cross-bearing has to do with dying to self, being completely concerned with living for Christ always and everywhere. It is only this kind of life that will stand the test at the bema, judgment seat of Christ.
