PLANNING SECTION CHIEF

The Planning Section Chief is responsible for the collection, evaluation, and dissemination of information for use in the incident. Information is needed to: 1) understand the current situation; 2) predict probable course of incident events; and 3) prepare alternative strategies and operations for the event.

q Obtain briefing from Incident Commander q Activate planning section units as needed q Collect, compile, evaluate, and disseminate incident information

q What has happened q What is happening q What will probably happen q Prepare ICS 203 Organization Assignment List in coordination with the IC q Establish information requirements and reporting schedules for all ICS organizational elements for use in preparing the Incident Action Plan (IAP) q Supervise preparation of the IAP q Provide input to the IC and the Operations Section Chief in preparing the IAP q Supervise the investigations unit q Provide periodic predictions on incident potential q Identify need for specialized resources to support the IAP q Establish information collection activities as necessary for weather, environmental conditions, toxic substances, evacuation and movement, etc. q Obtain maps, electronic data, and other relevant information q Compile and display incident information q Develop a documentation system and begin documenting all incident activities q Prepare alternate incident strategies q Prepare and distribute Incident Commander’s orders q Provide incident status information to the Information Officer for media and other briefings

q Advise incident staff of significant incident status changes q Prepare incident traffic plan in coordination with Ops q Prepare and distribute regular situation reports (SITREP) q Supervise preparation of the incident demobilization plan q Maintain Unit Log (ICS 214)
