Elisabeth Gambino

Elisabeth Gambino is a Professor of Visual Arts for Bard Early Colleges and has taught in Baltimore City Public Schools for over 16 years. Elisabeth earned an MFA from SCAD in 2005, and studied education at Johns Hopkins after earning a B.A. on the arts and social change through writing, international studies, and studio art at Hampshire College. Sustainability has been a passion of hers since 1997; and in 2000-2001 she studied international development and culture with SIT in Mali and IPSL in South Dakota. She assisted curator Mary Jane Jacob with the Evoking History public art series at Spoleto Festival USA, which illuminated the history of slavery and race in Charleston for an international audience. A global educator and experienced curriculum developer, Elisabeth is a two-time Bard Early College Fellow, with work focusing on arts integration and student- driven, project based learning. Fellowships with Earthwatch in Kenya and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation helped to kick start her inclusion of sustainability in the art room. Through the Maryland State Department of Education, Elisabeth has trained teachers on incorporating environmental education, visual storytelling, and project based learning. A 2017 Grosvenor Teaching Fellowship with the National Geographic Society in Alaska and a 2018 Fellowship with the National Endowment for Humanities in Montana and Yellowstone National Park deepened her understanding of sustainability in the U.S. Elisabeth is a three-time Fulbrighter, researching culture and biodiversity in Ecuador, art and culture in Mexico, and culture and education in Morocco and Japan. At Bard Early College Baltimore, she currently teaches college level courses including Environmental Humanities. She is committed to applying reflective practices of art-making to positively impact communities and relationships, guiding students to use the power of the arts to advocate on local and global issues.
