Michelle Titterton has worked in education for ten years after a fifteen-year corporate career in the energy sector. Her educational philosophy centers on the constructivist notion that children must interact with their environment to adapt and learn. As the director of sustainability and a science educator, Michelle recognizes that sustainability education is spoken in empathy through stories of the land, but also in kilowatt hours and quantitative methods. The lines from Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s “The Prince” have influenced her relationship with the environment since she read them as a high school student: “People have forgotten this truth. But you mustn’t forget it. You become responsible for what you’ve tamed. You’re responsible for your rose.” Michelle holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame, an MBA with concentrations in economics and marketing from the University of Chicago, an MAT (Master of art in teaching) from National-Louis University with endorsements in physical science and economics, and an M.S. in sustainability from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. She has served on the boards of several schools and environmental conservation groups. Michelle is also an MIT En-ROADS climate ambassador and serves on the Archdiocese of Chicago Laudato Si Action Platform working group. As a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Michelle is interested in the relationship between transformative outdoor experiences and climate action. She regularly presents on these topics nationally to a wide variety of audiences. In her “off” time, Michelle likes to garden and watch 80’s television shows with her family. An avid traveler, she is always planning her next adventure.
