AMIGO FINALLY GOT HIS WINGS Saying Goodbye to a Furry Friend
Having pets can bring so much joy to our lives. I’ve been an animal lover since I was a young boy. I still remember the time I spent with my first dog, Bingo. He was my little buddy, and we did everything together! Bingo was in my life for years until one day, I had to say goodbye to him. It was so heartbreaking, but I know I will see him again. It’s never easy saying goodbye to a furry friend. No matter how many times you’ve been through it, it’s always difficult. And recently, Alison and I had to say farewell to one of our beloved pets: Amigo. Amigo brought joy, laughter and love into my life for three and a half years. I’m going to miss how he always greeted me when I came downstairs or when I came home. Although Alison and I didn’t get to spend much time with him, he impacted our lives in more ways than one. And for that, I will forever be grateful. I remember when I first heard of Amigo. Alison and I were having dinner with some friends, and they asked us if we would be interested in adopting a retired seeing-eye dog. You see, our friend is a grant writer for a nonprofit that works with those who are disabled. She told us Amigo was aging out of the program and needed a forever home to enjoy his retirement. After seeing a picture of him, Alison immediately said yes. Next thing you know, we welcomed a 10-year-old good boy to our family!
AMIGO 2010-2023
It didn’t take long for Amigo to acclimate to his new home. He loved spending time with our other dog, Shady, getting belly rubs from his new mom and dad, and being his goofy self! I sometimes wonder how Amigo was a seeing-eye dog — he was so goofy! During his time with us, we addressed some health issues by changing his diet, improving his digestive health, fixing his teeth and providing medication. Because he was a senior dog, we knew he would need some additional TLC. But we didn’t mind in the slightest. Amigo was a Finney! And we would do anything to tend to his needs. Alison and I had three amazing summers with Amigo. He enjoyed playing on the beach, digging up sand, and running from the waves. He was such a happy dog, and we couldn’t have loved him more. When his health began to decline, Alison and I did everything we could to treat him and make him feel comfortable. Unfortunately, Amigo’s

EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON!
How Lucy Found Her Kidney Donor
to James, Humphrey decided to go over and apologize. However, James was unbothered by Indie and began conversing with Humphrey. Shortly into their discussion, Humphrey informed James that she needed a kidney. And it just so happened that James recently joined a kidney donation registry. So, the two exchanged phone numbers. Humphrey told the Daily Record, “And to be honest, I didn’t think anything else would come of it.” But Humphrey was in for a life- changing surprise. A couple of weeks later, blood tests revealed that James and Humphrey’s blood work was a perfect match — Humphrey could use James’ kidney! In October 2022, Humphrey had a kidney transplant, and today, she and James are healthy. “I’m so grateful for her,” Humphrey says, “... if I didn’t find a transplant ... I would die. I want this to be a message to other people not to give up hope.”
Coincidences happen for a reason — you may have experienced the “I was at the right place, at the right time” scenario once in your life. For the most part, these incidents are minor and lighthearted. But sometimes, coincidences can alter the course of your life. Lucy Humphrey has lived her entire adult life with lupus. Lupus is an inflammatory disease that affects joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs. While lupus has no cure, various treatment options improve quality of life and prevent flare-ups. However, Humphrey’s doctor told her that if she couldn’t find a new kidney within five years, there was a high possibility she could die. It’s very difficult to find a kidney match, and unfortunately, some people never find their “perfect match.” But this didn’t stop Humphrey from living her life. As she waited on a kidney transplant list, she and her partner decided to drive their camper to the beach and enjoy quality time together.
The couple brought Indie, one of their two Dobermans, on the trip. Indie wandered over to another camper and began pestering Katie James as she crocheted. After the third time Indie ventured over

go. This is when I came across a feather. Alison collects feathers, and if I find one, I always bring it back for her. As soon as my fingers touched the feather, something hit me — it was as if Amigo was talking to me. He told me he was okay and finally got his wings. Thank you, Amigo, for giving me a sign. It’s been several months since Amigo passed away, and our home was too quiet. So, Alison and I decided to adopt another furry friend! We recently got Enzo, a greyhound and Labrador retriever who has brought us so much joy. And I know Amigo is looking after us and is happy we got another furry friend.

condition continued to regress. So, we decided it was time to say goodbye to him and allow him to experience true peace. He’s now roaming the fields up in heaven with Bingo. The day after Amigo crossed the rainbow bridge, Alison and I were in shambles. So, I decided to take a walk. During my travels, I went down a street where I hardly ever

During the summer, you may spend most of your time outdoors — lounging by the pool, taking in an ocean view or hanging out with family and friends in your front or backyard. Either way, you will be under the hot sun for hours, so it’s vital you take steps to help your body cool down. We all know drinking water is one of the best ways to hydrate your body. But did you know there are several food and snack ideas that will keep you refreshed and rejuvenated? Here are some of our favorites! Make a fruit-filled smoothie. One of the best summer treats is a smoothie. Not only will you consume the necessary nutrients, but it’s also a great snack to cool off with. To embrace the summer festivities, you can make a tropical smoothie using dragon fruit, passion fruit, pineapple, papaya and other tropical fruits! Create an ice cream alternative: banana ‘nice cream.’ Sometimes, ice cream is the perfect way to cool down and satisfy your sweet tooth. However, ice cream is high in sugar and other ingredients that are not good for you. Instead, you can create your own “nice cream” by freezing a banana (or any fruit you prefer). Once frozen, place the fruit in a food processor or blender, and blend until the fruit has a soft-serve consistency. Add 1/4 cup of milk, water, or yogurt if you have trouble softening the frozen fruit. From there, add the “nice cream” to a container and place it in the freezer for several hours. Then, you’re ready to serve! Need something crunchy? Try cucumber and hummus! Have you heard the saying, “Cool as a cucumber”? Well, there’s a reason that phrase exists! Cucumbers instantly hydrate the body and reduce body heat. You can eat cucumbers alone, in a salad or with a delicious side — hummus! To begin, cut your cucumber into 1/4-inch slices. You can make hummus or purchase the product at your local grocery store. Finally, you can crunch and dip away on this refreshing and nutritious snack. Here at October Kitchen, we pride ourselves on making dishes that are not only delicious but also nutritious, savory, refreshing and rejuvenating! This summer, cool off by purchasing our ready-to-serve meals you and your family can enjoy. We look forward to serving you in the future! IT’S TIME TO COOL OFF WITH THESE 3 SUMMER FOODS!

SUMMER FUN WITHOUT THE BURN PROTECT YOUR SKIN WITH THESE SIMPLE TIPS
Summer is in full swing, which means the sun’s rays are shining bright for most of the country. In fact, the average UV index, or the intensity of ultraviolet light, across the U.S. is 7 or above on a scale of 13. To put that into perspective, a UV index of 3 is strong enough to damage the skin. However, just because the UV index is high doesn’t mean you have to hide inside — you just need to practice a bit of safety when you’re outdoors! To protect you and your family during the hottest months of the year, here are three ways to keep your skin sunburn-free. Use sunscreen whenever you’re outside — even when it’s cloudy. Many think sunscreen is only necessary at the beach or near a pool. However, the sun’s harmful rays will always reach
your skin, no matter what you’re doing outside. Also, remember that while clouds may look like they’re blocking the sun, UV rays easily penetrate them and water like an ocean, lake, or pool. That’s why sunscreen is essential whenever you’re outside, even for just 20 minutes on a cloudy day. Choose a broad-spectrum sunblock that is at least 30 SPF and protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Reapply every two hours, and if you’re swimming or playing in the water, reapply every hour! Choose your outside time wisely. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so your skin is much more susceptible to damage during this period. If you can, save outdoor tasks
(like yardwork) for early morning or late afternoon. If you are planning to spend some time outside within this time frame, it’s best to do so in the shade. You can also use the shadow rule: If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s rays are strong enough to damage your skin, so it’s time to find shade. Pick the right outfits. If possible, choose darker-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants made with tightly woven fabrics like canvas or synthetic materials such as nylon. Then, protect your face, neck and ears with a wide-brimmed hat and cover your eyes with 99% to 100% UV-absorbent sunglasses. These types of clothing and accessories block more of the sun’s rays from ever reaching your skin and minimize your risk of a severe sunburn.
