Iowa Donor Network's 2020 Impact Report

2020 IMPACT REPORT

WHAT A YEAR! I FROM OUR CEO AND BOARD CHAIR

2020 HAS BEEN A CHALLENGING YEAR FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. AMAZINGLY, DESPITE THE MANY CHALLENGES, OUR HEROES, DONORS AND THEIR DONOR FAMILIES, CONTINUED TO PUT THEIR TRUST IN US AND SAY, “YES” TO DONATION. WE ARE HONORED AND THANKFUL FOR THEIR TRUST WHICH EXEMPLIFIES THE TRUE NATURE OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT, THE BELIEF THAT EVEN IN THE WORST OF TIMES, THERE IS GOOD IN THE WORLD. We are also very grateful to the dedicated staff of Iowa Donor Network who respond when our donor families need us and make donation happen. At an unknown risk to themselves and their health and well-being, these courageous people report to work in COVID filled hospitals. In the background, there are many other team members and support staff that make the front-line response possible. On very short notice, the entire IDN team figured out how to work differently to protect ourselves and each other from the Corona virus. For most, this meant figuring out how to do their jobs from home, in a remote environment. No small feat in a rural state like Iowa where Internet bandwidth is a challenge. Through patience and determination, we figured it out and adapted to the challenges that came our way and continue to do so. We are especially in awe of those staff members who found themselves conducting home school classes and daycare duties while trying to be online attending to their full-time jobs. What a year! We congratulate all for a job well done! In the end, we pulled it together to meet our mission of, Working Together to Transform Lives Through Organ and Tissue Donation . Also, while we operated in a virtual environment, including conducting online Driver’s education classes, volunteer training and hospital development presentations and meetings we accomplished some major milestones: In 2020 we recovered organs from our 1500 th organ donor and provided our 5000 th organ for transplantation. Also, in a historic first, we worked with an out-of-state transplant center to recover a heart for transplantation from a Donor After Circulatory Death. This is a difficult procedure that is still considered quite rare in the United States. In another milestone, we coordinated our 12,000 th tissue donation! All of this while coping with PPE shortages and virus-related staffing challenges. In another first, we held a virtual 5K fundraiser and awareness effort that exceeded our goals for participation and funds raised. We also held our annual Donor Candlelight Tribute events virtually and had our best attendance ever! While COVID-19 has certainly challenged us this year, it has also brought us some gifts. We have learned that we can reach many more donor families and volunteers through virtual offerings, and so, we will probably continue some of these strategies long after the virus has been brought under control. We look forward to that day when we can greet all of you in person again.

They have not only provided my own family with support and a way to cope with our loss, they provide comfort, guidance and knowledge to donors and recipients and their families on a daily basis. GRATITUDE

KIM BURDAKIN LIVER RECIPIENT AND IDN BOARD MEMBER

“I am alive because of organ donation. I am grateful to the family of Steven, my donor. There will never be enough that I can say or do to show my gratitude for giving me my life back. When I became deathly sick, I was a single mother of two daughters ages 12 and 9. Because of that gift, my girls didn’t have to grow up without a mom.”

GOING VIRTUAL In March the COVID-19 pandemic caused Iowa Donor Network to shift many of its outreach and fundraising efforts online.

TONI KAUTZ DONOR FAMILY AND IDN VOLUNTEER

“Back in 2015, I was looking to volunteer for an organization that did great things for the community and was happy I found Iowa Donor Network. Although I didn’t have any ties to organ donation personally, I was welcomed on my first day of volunteer orientation with open arms and kindness. You can usually find me volunteering in the office helping out with compiling donor bracelets, medallions, entering survey information from community educations or putting manuals together. Since becoming a volunteer, I have been an advocate to family and friends about donation and have helped get them signed up to be a donor. In 2019, donation did touch my life personally when my Mom passed away. She thought she was too old to donate, but she would be so proud to know she was able to donate her corneas. My Mom was a woman of great faith who found joy in everything she did. I miss so much about her; all the laughter we shared, the songs she used to sing, the way she told a joke, and how she wouldn’t let you leave her house until you played a game of cards with her.

Every time I volunteer in the office, my spirits are lifted knowing that although I’m not volunteering on the frontlines, I know what I do helps in some way with the mission of Iowa Donor Network.”

WENDY LUFT LOGAN’S MOM

“We are beyond excited and humbled by the dramatic increase in people choosing to be donors on their hunting and fishing licenses. I truly believe that organ donor awareness and education is the key. Logan's Law will continue to increase those numbers every year and not only is that an awesome contribution to Logan's legacy, but more importantly we are saving lives.”

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR CAN MAKE

My name is Phil Lewis and I was listed for heart transplant on March 26, 2018 at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. While on the list, the good and bad days of physical health would come and go but mentally, it was tough. Not knowing when the call was going to come and not being able to plan anything you could not change in a moment’s notice was hard. My family and friends helped me through this time. On June 9, 2020 at 1:30 pm, I got the call. My first thought was is this real? When I realized it was, I quickly said “Yes!” to the doctor and called my wife. I was admitted to the hospital that night and on June 10, 2020 at 2:30 pm, I received the gift of life. I am now nearly 8 months post-transplant and I am feeling good. I am so grateful to be here to share my story! I can do things I enjoy that I couldn’t before my transplant, like mechanical work on cars and equipment around our acreage. I'm able to walk out of the house to run errands and not have to carry a backpack full of extra stuff for my LVAD device. When the phone rings, my mind does not wonder if this is the call. My life has completely changed thanks to my generous donor. The overall process from being listed to transplant to recovery has been tough but has been worth it. What a difference a year can make. I was granted my miracle and I am thankful every day for my donor, donor family, and the second chance I was given.

With a grateful heart,

Phil Lewis Heart Recipient

POWERFUL

TYLER WEIG LIVING DONOR

“Knowledge is power. The more I learned about living kidney donation and its ability to solve a serious problem, the more comfortable I became with the idea. In a world that can sometimes make people feel powerless, I learned that living kidney donation is an amazingly powerful solution. I encourage everyone to take their own first small step by learning more about living kidney donation. You may find it to be the best path you have ever explored. I did.”
