The community centre refrigerators were also replaced with more energy-efficient units. Other achievements include replacing all
758 sodium-bulb street lights with energy-ef- àDJFOU-&%MJHIUT,OVETFOOPUFEUIJTBMPOF saved the township more than $100,000 on its electricity bill in the first year of the energy conservation plan with later hydro bills for the township showing reduced costs. Upgrades to the municipal sewage lagoon system improved wastewater treatment at the facility, which Knudsen noted, translates into a cleaner environment. Also the three diesel-powered backup generators for the wastewater treatment plant were replaced with units powered by natural gas. /FYUTUFQPGUIFQMBOXJMMTFFVQHSBEFT for the municipal pumping station, replace- ment of windows at the municipal office with energy-efficient units, a study of the sewer system on how to reduce the amount of rainwater which collects in the system and results in more water that needs treatment.
Champlain Township has made signifi- cant progress in reducing its “carbon footprint” and council plans to make that footprint even smaller with the next stage of the municipality’s energy conservation plan. Township council approved a report and recommendations from administration on the next year’s plan for the five-year municipal energy conservation and demand manage- ment plan. The plan covers policy changes and facility upgrades during the period from 2014 to 2019, to reduce the amount of elec- tricity used for municipal operations and also contribute to greenhouse gas reduction as required provincial government regulations. “Since the plan was first developed in
