Winter Golf Course Set Up

As part of our ongoing effort to improve the quality and consistency of our golf course playing conditions, the Golf & Green Committee approved the following action at the business meeting held on 8 November 2011. Winter play course set up at ANCC will commence on or about 1 December and re- main in effect until approximately 1 March each season. During this time only two sets of tee markers will be placed on each hole – one forward and one back. In many cases artificial mats will be placed on the teeing ground. When this option is utilized, all players should play from the mat and refrain from use of the grass teeing ground. We believe that this course of action will minimize winter damage, promote faster spring recovery and provide superior playing conditions during the golf season, generally March through October. The Committee thanks you for your support.

2 ANCC NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2016 and players are to post their scores on these sheets. A total of 10 rounds of golf must be played only at the ANCC courses. WGO-18 (Women’s 18-Hole) Upcoming December events:

Winter Golf is played during the inactive season from December through March. A minimum of ten 9-hole scores is required for completion. Sign up on the bulletin board in one of the locker rooms. Manually post your scores (using pencil) on the supplied score sheets on a bulletin board after you play. If you play 18 holes, post as two 9-hole scores. After posting 10 scores, if a future score is better than any of the ten listed, you can erase any score and replace it with an improved score. This process can be repeated until you have finished the season. At the end of the winter season, participants will be billed $5 and any winnings will be credited to their account. New members are welcome at any time during the year. Briefly, any female ANCC member, or female spouse of any ANCC member, 18 years of age or older, is eligible to join if they have an accredited USGA Handicap Index of 36.4 or less and at least five 18-hole scores played from any of the ANCC courses. Dues for full members are $55 per year which includes fees for Ace days. Dues for Social members (non-golfers) are $15 per year. For more info on WGO-18, click here . 2017 Northern Virginia Retired Men’s Golf Association (NVRMGA) Don’t miss out on a great experience of playing local country club courses. If you are 55 or older, you can become a member of the NVRMGA and do just that! ANCC will field two separate teams, one at Arlington and one at Fairfax. Both teams are always looking for new players. The ANCC Arlington team was the league champion in 2015 and 2010, and co-champions with the ANCC Fairfax team in 2011. In 2016, the ARL team finished in second place and the FFX team finished in seventh place. Both teams are looking forward to successful seasons in 2017. The 2017 ANCC teams will be put together within the next few months, so there is still plenty of time for you to sign up. HOW? Sign up the ANCC website before 31 January 2017 for the ARL Team, and by 1 March 2017 for the FFX Team by visiting the NVRMGA page under Golf Organizations (there are separate links for the ARL team and FFX team). Even if you were a NVRMGA player last year, it is required you sign-up again this year. A contact list will be posted on the golf bulletin board in each ANCC pro shop whereby eligible ANCC golfers not currently part of a team, but wishing to join us in 2017, can express interest. How does NVRMGA work? We play each of 12 opposing teams twice, once at home and once away between early April and mid-October. Play is on Thursdays, teeing off at 8:45 a.m. at home and either 8:45 or 9:00 away. As a team member, you will be assigned to play in at least six matches and have the opportunity to volunteer as a substitute for matches to which you are not assigned. A schedule will be produced in early February for ARL and early March for FFX indicating which matches you have been assigned. These are full handicap matches, so no need to worry about your current handicap index. If you would like more information, please contact Mike Downs 703-317-1822 mpdx2@hotmail.com ; Nick Fritz 703-553-4435 nfritz@burdeshaw.com ; or Jim Schroeder 703-237-1939 jms.3821@verizon.net for the

On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, two Army Navy Country Club members, Admiral Husband E. Kimmel , the Commander-In-Chief Pacific Fleet, and Lieutenant General Walter C. Short , Commanding General of the Hawaii Department of the U.S. Army, arose early to prepare for their bi-weekly golf game. The brazen attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor not only cancelled their plans and wrought severe damage to the U.S. Forces in Hawaii, it ultimately resulted in the reassignment of both officers. In the aftermath three other ANCC members, Admirals Chester Nimitz, Harold Stark and Earnest King were caught up in a daisy chain of reassignments which many historians believe had significant impact on the outcome of the ensuing war.
