Civil Ceremonies in Cambridgeshire Most people don’t visit the registration service very often in their lives but when they do it is usually for a significant reason. The information which follows seeks to answer some of the most common questions we are asked about marriage and civil partnership. What is a Civil Marriage? A civil marriage is a non-religious ceremony that can take place in any approved venue or Register Office. Two registrars will attend, one to conduct the ceremony and one to register the marriage and complete the legal paperwork. You will need to ask two adults to witness your marriage. Closer to your ceremony date, you will be invited to log into your online account to select your chosen vows and readings and choose from a range of personalisation options. What is a Civil Partnership? A civil partnership is a non-religious, written contract between two people. It can involve simply signing the legal paperwork or can be incorporated into a ceremony. It is important to remember that a civil partnership between opposite sex couples cannot be converted into a marriage at a later date and may not be recognised in other countries.
4
The registration service is unable to give advice on the validity of any marriage or civil partnership, or of the benefits of choosing a marriage or civil partnership, if you are unsure then you should seek independent legal advice. A same sex civil partnership can be converted to a marriage by appointment at our Cambridge office. This can be a simple administrative procedure in the presence of a registrar or a ceremony in an Approved Venue or a Council Ceremony Room. If you would like to convert your civil partnership to a marriage phone us on 0345 045 1363. Where Can My Civil Ceremony Take Place? Cambridgeshire boasts an extensive selection of Approved Venues for your civil ceremony, as well as registration offices conveniently located across the county. Whether you are looking for an idyllic city location or a rustic venue in the tranquility of the countryside, Cambridgeshire really does have it all. You can find a full list of Approved Venues and register offices in this brochure, or online at www.cambridgeshireceremonies.co.uk/venues.

How Do I Make the Arrangements 1. Create an account on www. cambridgeshireceremonies.co.uk.
5
Other Information People coming from abroad to give notice of marriage or civil partnership in England and Wales must provide evidence of 7 clear days’ residence immediately prior to their notice appointment. Couples must attend together. Before you attend your notice appointment you must know where you intend to marry or form a civil partnership because the notice you give is for that venue only. We recommend that, before you pay a deposit to a venue for your ceremony, you book your ceremony with us to ensure that registrars are able to attend on your preferred date and time. Your marriage or civil partnership must take place within 12 calendar months of the date of giving notice.
2. Select your date.
3. Book your registrars.
4. Book your notice of marriage or civil partnership with the local authority where you live. This must be no earlier than 12 months in advance, but must be more than 29 days before the ceremony. In order to have a civil marriage or civil partnership, you will need to give legal notice of intention in a registration office. Where this takes place will depend on where you live and your nationalities. If You Are Both British or Irish Citizens or have EU Settlement Scheme Status You will both need to make an appointment to give notice at your local registration office. You and your partner must both have lived at your address for the past 7 clear days immediately prior to your appointment. If You or Your Partner is a Foreign National You are a foreign national if you: • are not a British or Irish citizen • do not hold settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme • did not apply to the EU Settlement Scheme on or before 30 th June 2021 • do not have indefinite leave to remain • do not have diplomatic status • are not visiting military based in the UK Please contact us for more information or consult www.gov.uk for the latest guidance and advice.

Making a Booking You can check availability and make a booking for your ceremony online. Go to www.cambridgeshireceremonies.co.uk and follow the instructions. If you are having your ceremony at an Approved Venue you must have discussed possible dates and times with them before booking registrars to attend. Please note that ceremony fees are payable in full at the time of booking. Once you have registered on the website and booked your ceremony you will have the opportunity to book your notice appointments. When you book your notice appointment you will be informed of the documentation required by each party to marry or form a civil partnership.
6
Please note that bookings cannot be made by a third party; appointments can only be booked directly by one of the partners to a marriage or civil partnership. If you are unable to book online please phone 0345 045 1363.

Making Your Day Special – Personalising Your Ceremony Our experienced registrars will do everything they can to deliver your ceremony with a personal touch for a unique and memorable occasion. While there are certain specific words that must be said to make your marriage legal, there are many ways to personalise your ceremony. The legal words can be said during a short, simple, and straight forward ceremony, or they can be incorporated into a longer ceremony, personalised by you, to include an ‘I Do’ or ‘I Will’ moment, personal vows or promises, readings, and special wording for the ring exchange. Outdoor ceremonies Some of our Approved Venues offer the option of outdoor ceremonies between 1 st March and 31 st October, dependent on weather conditions. Please discuss this directly with your chosen venue when you make your booking.
7
Animals at ceremonies Some of our Approved Venues now welcome your pet at ceremonies, although you must agree this with the venue in advance. A member of the Ceremonies Team will contact you to complete a checklist before the ceremony date and a small additional charge will be applied to your booking. Registered assistance dogs are permitted in all registration offices and Approved Venues at no additional charge. Making your choices We will contact you closer to the time of your ceremony with details of how to log into your online account and select your ceremony personalisation options. You can then amend your choices up to 2 weeks before your ceremony.

Thinking of using a Celebrant for your Special Day? Our Bespoke Ceremonies could be the answer... Our Celebrants have years of experience and have conducted thousands of ceremonies so you can be confident that your special day is in safe hands when you choose our bespoke option, and you have the added bonus that all the legal requirements are seamlessly taken care of. When you choose our Bespoke Ceremonies, you will be contacted by your own ceremony coordinator who will guide you through the entire process. They will not only be with you for your legal registration but will also conduct your ceremony on your special day. You will have your legal registration with just the two of you and your two witnesses, either the day before or on the morning of your ceremony in one of our offices. This will be a straightforward, low-key appointment so that all the special elements are saved for the day. If you are using an approved venue you can opt to have this element done at the venue. Your celebrant will perform the ceremony at the venue of your choice; it doesn’t need to be a licensed premise, it can be anywhere you want, such as a garden or open space. We will use a script that you have chosen and compiled carefully together with your coordinator, and it can incorporate symbolic ceremonies such as handfasting, a sand ceremony, or candle lighting. The ceremony can be exactly as you wish. Our Bespoke Ceremonies offer the best of everything, allowing you the freedom to express yourselves and have a day you have always

imagined. With the security and experience of our professional, trained celebrants and the ease of the legalities taken care of, it really is the perfect solution. Contact us with your requirements and your coordinator will be in touch: ceremonies@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Getting Married or Forming a Civil Partnership in a Religious Building Church of England and Wales If you are having a religious marriage in a Church of England church, the vicar will normally ‘call banns’ which means that you will not need to give legal notice of intent to marry at a registration office. However, if you are subject to immigration control please visit our website for further advice.
9
Other Denominations or Faiths If you are having a legal religious marriage under any other denomination or faith, you will both need to give notice of intent to marry or to form a civil partnership at a registration office. The venue should be where either party usually worships or in the registration district where either party resides. Your minister will tell you if you need to book a registrar to attend the ceremony. If you are advised that a registrar will be required please visit our website for further advice as soon as possible.

Other Ceremonies Naming Ceremonies Baby naming ceremonies are a time to welcome a new child into the family and are a great alternative to a traditional religious ceremony. They can be held within one of our ceremony rooms, at an approved venue or at a venue of your choice with prior agreement. Naming ceremonies are a meaningful and joyous way of gathering the people that are important to you to celebrate the arrival of your child. The ceremony can involve you making lifelong commitments or promises to the child and to each other, and share the love, hope and dreams you have for your child. You can introduce supporting adults in the ceremony who will take a special interest and play a significant role in the child’s upbringing. They can be referred to as sponsors, mentors, supporters or whatever you wish to call them. You may also wish to include other children in the ceremony. The ceremony can include the significance of the child’s name, include readings and music and be as formal or informal as you wish to make it.
10
Renewal of Vows and Celebration Ceremonies These are special ceremonies for couples who have already contracted a marriage or civil partnership and who wish to celebrate and renew their vows with family and friends, and to celebrate their commitment for a second time. People choose to renew their vows for many reasons, they may have reached a milestone anniversary or simply want to make vows of commitment again in front of family and friends. Renewing vows gives family and friends the chance to celebrate your commitment if you got married abroad with only a few people present, or maybe you just didn’t have the day you would have really liked. Whatever the reason we can help you plan a ceremony that reflects your journey as a couple and include personal vows, re-dedicating of rings, music and readings. You can also choose to include children or grandchildren in your ceremony if you wish. Ceremonies can be held in one of our ceremony rooms throughout the county, an approved venue or an alternative venue with prior agreement.

Citizenship Ceremonies Any person who has applied for and been granted British Citizenship will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony where they will swear or affirm allegiance to the reigning Sovereign and pledge loyalty to the United Kingdom before they are presented with their Certificate of Naturalisation. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the significance of becoming a British Citizen and be officially welcomed to Cambridgeshire. There are two types of citizenship ceremony to choose from: • Group citizenship ceremonies, conducted by a Citizenship Officer, take place weekly in the Red Kite Room at New Shire Hall, Alconbury Weald. The ceremony is attended by the Chair or Vice-Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council, alongside dignitaries representing His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire. Citizens over the age of 18 can each invite up to two guests to attend their ceremony. An official photographer is present and you may order photographs online after the ceremony. There is no additional charge for a group ceremony as it is part of the initial Home Office naturalisation fee.
• Private citizenship ceremonies are held in Cambridgeshire Register Office. These can usually be arranged at short notice for an additional fee. They are conducted by a registrar and additional guests can be invited. There is no requirement for under 18s to attend a citizenship ceremony. To book a citizenship ceremony please visit our website for further details.

THOMAS ELLWOOD PHOTOGRAPHY Tom’s unique style & warm personality creates images that will melt any heart. Seeing Tom in action is like a master class in wedding photography as he goes above & beyond expectations with exceptional attention to detail. “There are many photographers out there…But very very few like Thomas. The unique ideas he has for pictures, how fast he gets them done, the fun, energy & personal touch he brings to any occasion are simply one of a kind!!!! I watched him fly across the world to come & photograph my best friends wedding here in Ohio, USA...and I will be bringing him back to do mine!!!” “For the past two days my husband and I have been trying think and put into words how amazing Tom was on our wedding day. From the second we booked Tom we knew he would be amazing, he’s professional, charming, creative and above all a genuinely lovely guy. Nothing was too much trouble, he went above and beyond any other wedding photographer I have ever seen. Our guests loved him, and he was one of the last on the dance floor. Tom wasn’t just our photographer, he felt like a guest that constructed and delicately put together our day to ensure it went as smoothly and as amazingly as possible.”

Preparing for Your Ceremony If your ceremony is in a Council Ceremony Room please arrive about 15 minutes before it is due to begin. If it is at an Approved Venue we recommend that you arrive at least 30 minutes before it is due to begin. The registration staff will see you both, together or separately, before the ceremony begins. They will confirm and update where necessary the details given at the time of your notice. This is to ensure that the details on the schedule are correct on the day. You need to provide two witnesses who can be relatives or friends, ideally over 18, who must be able to speak and understand English. They must be present throughout the ceremony. If the ceremony is held outside, within a structure that has been approved for ceremonies, the witnesses must be within the structure throughout the ceremony.

If you want to choose your own music for the ceremony you will need to provide digital copies of your music on the day. Please take a look at our website for details about supplying music. Your photographer (or nominated person) can take non-flash photographs throughout the ceremony. Guests can be invited to take photographs at specific points during the ceremony. If you are having a video, the videographer needs to be in a static position. No photographs or video can be taken of the schedule, although a mock-up version is available for photo opportunities.
“I love nothing more than weddings. To be a part of a couple’s most important day is truly magical.” - Guðný, Ceremony Officer.
