“The way our service was handled was very ‘us’ and the folk that ran the ceremony took our ideas and made it feel special in our own way. I commend them on adapting their approach to the wishes of the couple and imagine everyone comes away feeling that it was tailored to their idea of what a ceremony should be.”

Where Can My Civil Ceremony Take Place? Cambridgeshire boasts an extensive selection of approved venues for your civil ceremony, as well as registration offices conveniently located across the county. Whether you are looking for an idyllic city location or a rustic venue in the tranquility of the countryside, Cambridgeshire really does have it all. You can find a full list of approved venues and register offices in this brochure or online at www.cambridgeshireceremonies.co.uk/venues Alternatively, if you have somewhere else in Cambridgeshire in mind, read on to learn more about our Bespoke Service… Getting Married or Forming a Civil Partnership in a Religious Building Church of England and Wales If you are having a religious marriage in a Church of England church, the vicar will normally ‘read the Banns’ which means that you will not need to give legal notice of intent to marry at a registration office. However, if you are subject to immigration control please visit our website for further advice. Other Denominations or Faiths If you are having a legal religious marriage under any other denomination or faith, you will both need to give notice of intent to marry or to form a civil partnership at a registration office. The venue should be where either party usually worships or in the registration district where either party resides. Your minister will tell you if you need to book a registrar to attend the ceremony. If you are advised that a registrar will be required please visit our website for further advice as soon as possible: www.cambridgeshireceremonies.co.uk.

Civil Ceremonies in Cambridgeshire What is a Civil Marriage? A civil marriage is a non-religious ceremony that can take place in any approved venue or register office. Two registrars will attend, one to conduct the ceremony and one to register the marriage and complete the legal paperwork. You will need to compete your ceremony planner with your chosen vows and readings, you can personalise your ceremony to your own requirements. You will need to ask two adults to witness your marriage. What is a Civil Partnership? A civil partnership is a non-religious, written contract between two people. It can involve simply signing the legal paperwork or can be incorporated into a ceremony. It is important to remember that a civil partnership between opposite sex couples cannot be converted into a marriage at a later date and may not be recognised in other countries. The registration service is unable to give advice on the validity of any marriage or civil partnership, or of the benefits of choosing a marriage or civil partnership. If you are unsure, then you should seek independent legal advice. A same sex civil partnership can be converted to a marriage by appointment at our Cambridge office. This can be a simple administrative procedure in the presence of a registrar or a ceremony in an approved venue or a council ceremony room. If you would like to convert your civil partnership to a marriage, phone us on 0345 045 1363.

Thinking of a Completely Bespoke, Celebrant-Led, Personal Ceremony?

Our bespoke ceremonies are designed for couples that want a truly personal ceremony and offer the best of everything, allowing you the freedom to express yourselves and have a day you have always imagined. Our bespoke ceremonies give you the security of our experienced, professional, trained celebrants and the ease of the legalities seamlessly taken care of whilst embracing the flexibility and uniqueness of a celebrant-led ceremony. You will work with your celebrant to create a ceremony just for you, they will get to know you and your love story, meet you, find out about your plans for the day and create a completely personal ceremony that allows you complete freedom in what you say and do during your ceremony.

You can incorporate symbolic ceremonies such as sand ceremony, unity candle, ring warming, handfasting or jumping the broom. We will work with you to choose the right ceremony for you. Bespoke ceremonies can take place anywhere, anytime. Your venue does not have to be licenced so you can really choose a setting that inspires you and reflects your personality, or even your own garden; there really is no limit. You will have complete flexibility regarding your day and no limitations when it comes to the timings or content of your ceremony; it can tell your very own unique story and will be a day that all your guests remember.

“We were looked after by Gillian and the team in Cambridge for our wedding. She was incredible. She completely matched what we were looking for and she was warm, approachable and really ‘got’ us. We could not fault the service provided by the entire team. It was very memorable, and we will remember Gill for a very long time as being a significant part of our day.” “Great communication throughout the whole booking. Fabulous team.”

Our bespoke, celebrant-led ceremonies have the advantage of the legal side all taken care of for you, along with the added benefit that your celebrant will always have a full team backing them and supporting them, so should the worst happen, such as your celebrant falling ill on the day, your ceremony will still always go ahead just as planned.

“It was a truly wonderful day, the sun came out for us – and without exception everyone complimented the wonderful ceremony – saying it was so ‘us’ and one of the best ceremonies they’ve ever seen! Thank you SO much for helping us turn our dreams into a reality with the ceremony, they were truly moments we will cherish forever, and it was exactly what we wanted – and more that we never knew we needed too!”

Personal Touches for Your Special Day While there are certain specific words that must be said to make your marriage legal, there are many ways to personalise your ceremony. The legal words can be said during a short, simple, and straightforward ceremony, or they can be incorporated into a longer ceremony, personalised by you, to include an ‘I Do’ or ‘I Will’ moment, personal vows or promises, readings, and special wording for the ring exchange. We will contact you closer to the time of your ceremony with details of how to select your ceremony personalisation options. These can be amended up to two weeks before your ceremony. Music, themes, readings . You need to provide two witnesses who can be relatives or friends, ideally over 18, who must be able to speak and understand English. They must be present throughout the ceremony. If the ceremony is held outside, within a structure that has been approved for ceremonies, the witnesses must be within the structure throughout the ceremony.

Other Ceremonies Naming Ceremonies

Renewal of Vows and Celebration Ceremonies These are special ceremonies for couples who have already contracted a marriage or civil partnership and who wish to celebrate and renew their vows with family and friends, and to celebrate their commitment for a second time. People choose to renew their vows for many reasons; they may have reached a milestone anniversary or simply want to make vows of commitment again in front of family and friends. Renewing vows gives family and friends the chance to celebrate your commitment. We can help you plan a ceremony that reflects your journey as a couple and include personal vows, re-dedicating of rings, music and readings. You can also choose to include children or grandchildren in your ceremony if you wish. Ceremonies can be held in one of our ceremony rooms throughout the county, an approved venue or an alternative venue with prior agreement.

Baby naming ceremonies are a time to welcome a new child into the family, can be held within one of our ceremony rooms, at an approved venue or at a venue of your choice with prior agreement, and are a great alternative to a traditional religious ceremony. Naming ceremonies are a meaningful and joyous way of gathering the people that are important to you to celebrate the arrival of your child. The ceremony can involve you making lifelong commitments or promises to the child and to each other, and share the love, hope and dreams you have for your child. You can introduce supporting adults into the ceremony; they can be called sponsors, mentors, supporters or whatever you wish to call them, these significant people in the child’s life will take a special interest in the child’s upbringing or you may wish to include other children in the ceremony. The ceremony can include the significance of the child’s name, include readings and music and be as formal or informal as you wish to make it.

“Our registrars were amazing, they were both so kind to myself and my husband. We were both extremely nervous at our separate pre- Ceremony meetings and they made us feel very at ease. The ceremony was perfect, our registrar took things slowly and it helped us feel calmer which meant we got to enjoy it more. Both our registrars made it so personal for us and everything ran extremely smoothly and beautifully. We couldn’t have asked for a better day or better people!”
