Russell Ravens make their mark at OFSSA

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

They came. They played. They made their mark against some of the top teams in Ontario. The Russell Ravens varsity girls finished their high school rugby season in high spirits. The Ravens of St.Thomas Aquinas Catho- lic High School were one of the «wild card» entries for this year’s Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletic Associations’ (OFSSA) provincial championships in girls’ rugby. The Ravens finished second to Lasalle in the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association’s (EOSSAA) final, ma- king Lasalle the designated rep team for Eas- tern Ontario at OFSSA, but the Ravens also qualified for the provincials as the number two team for the East. «They loved the experience,» said Coach Nick Longval, during an interview following the team’s return fromMississauga and the OFSSA. «Not being outplayed made them realize they have the capability of being one of the top teams in the province.» The Ravens entered the OFSSA list ran- ked number 11 out of the 12 teams com- peting. They had two guaranteed games in the opening round-robin session, playing first against third-ranked Quinte. The game finished 17-15 for Quinte but the Ravens came close to taking the other side down for the win.

The Ravens of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School in Russell are proud of their accomplishments this season. They took the Prescott-Russell varsity girls’ rugby title away from their long-standing rival, the RocklandWildcats, and also showed several teams at the provincial championships that Russell has a rugby squad with a strong fighting spirit.

«We were ahead for the whole game,» said Coach Longval, «and then, at the very last second, Quinte scored their second try and they also managed to get their conversion (kick).» Longval noted that the Ravens had arrived at Mississauga just expecting to benefit from the experience of playing in the provin- cials. The results of the first game «woke themup» to the possibility that they play higher-ranked teams and have a chance at beating them. The Ravens were still a bit tired from their opening match with Quinte and lost their final round-robin set against West Hill, putting them in the consolation round of games against Courtice. «They were a much larger team than us,» said Coach Longval, adding that the other side «got a quick try» early in the match but

then faced a rally effort from the Ravens that left Russell the winner with 10-5 on the scoreboard. «We clawed our way back,» said Longval. «That put us in the T- Cup final against Jean Vanier. That finished 22-5 for Vanier.» Longval noted that the Ravens displayed «excellent sports- manship, positive attitude, and a great all-round work ethic» throughout the season, including their OFSSA adventure. He and co-coach Penny Longval expect to have at least nine experienced starters coming back next season for varsity girls’ rugby at STA. «And, next year, OFSSA is here in the Ottawa area,» said Coach Penny Longval. «We want to repeat our Prescott-Russell victory so we can try for OFSSA again.»
