SIX METERS ABOVE AN LNG TERMINAL
One recent deployment put that adaptability to the test.
PetroHab was called to a floating storage and regasification unit that had effectively become a permanent LNG terminal supplying fuel to an onshore electrical system.
The facility could not simply be shut down and taken gas-free.
Then a critical piece of equipment failed. Removing the equipment for repair required workers to cut away structural beams positioned above the unit using torches, grinders and other hot-work equipment. Below them was an operating LNG facility. “Any of the sparks that could be accumulated from that torch, or the grinders or any of the hot-work equipment, could be an ignition source,” Shutt says.
The consequences of losing control of the work environment were significant.
“If any one of those sparks was to come in contact with any of those
hydrocarbons, it could be detrimental to lives and a country.”
Shutt, General Manager, Petrohab
PetroHab mobilized technicians and equipment to the site.
The enclosure had to be constructed approximately six meters above the platform deck around the area where the structural work would take place
