I t’s kind of amazing that it’s been 10 years since we opened our doors. When I opened Lake Burien PT in October 2009, I just wanted to practice physical therapy the way I thought it should be practiced; that is to say, I wanted to see patients one-on-one for a full hour. As I was getting ready to open, I had no firm plans, no referrals, nothing. I was opening my doors because I thought there was a need for high-quality therapy care in our community. I had an “if you build it, they will come” mentality. I had no idea if it was going to work, but I had a certain amount of confidence. I knew what I wanted to do, and I didn’t see failure as an option. To add to my stress, I had decided to rent a 2,000-square-foot space. It was a scary thing to lease such a large space when I had no idea how I was going to pay for it or how the business would turn out. I jumped headfirst into the deep end. I had heard about clinicians who rented tiny spaces then eventually moved into larger spaces as they grew, but I wanted to skip that step. I just wanted to be in a space I could grow into. So, on that first day, it was just me and a person manning the front desk — and my first patient! Only one person made an appointment for our first day of operation. Of course, that meant they had all of my attention! Thankfully, grow we did! Within six months, we had our second (part-time) clinician! I did work pretty long hours that first year and a half before we had a second full-time therapist on stage. But that’s expected when you’re first starting out and working to grow your business. But once we did really start growing and bring on new physical therapists, we started practically tripping over one another in the 2000-square-foot space. So, what do we do? We took over the area right next door! We knocked down the wall, remodeled, and before

we knew it, we were working out of a 4,000-square-foot space!

Today, we’re up to 4 1/2 clinicians. It’s been wonderful getting to this point! I look back and think about all the people in my field who thought I was crazy. “You can’t make money if you only see one patient an hour!” they said. Well, I proved them wrong. You can dedicate time to patients and have a successful business at the same time!

I was a firm believer that this was the right way to run a clinic in 2009, and I’m still a firm believer in 2019. We wouldn’t be here if it didn’t work. It’s impossible to treat people who suffer from persistent pain if you don’t spend time with them. I couldn’t have gotten here without my amazing staff. They put in so much work to make Lake Burien PT an amazing part of the community. I’m also thankful to my wonderful husband, as well as my son, who have both stuck by me as we’ve navigated this wild ride. I’m looking forward to the years ahead. I have a lot of ideas I’m excited to turn into reality. For example, I’m excited to see our newest programs grow and flourish, like our aquatic therapy program. I’m also ready to learn even more about treating pain. The next year, and the next several years, will be amazing — and I can’t wait to share them with you!

At-Home Strength Training Is Easier Than You Think

Situps This simple floor exercise helps work the ab muscles and strengthens your overall core. You can easily do situps alone by tucking your toes under a bed, dresser, or another piece of furniture that will help keep your feet in place as you sit up and lower yourself back down. Pushups This is another self-explanatory exercise you can do just about anywhere. Pushups help work the pectoral muscles, triceps, and deltoids. Basically, if you want to work on your arms and upper body, pushups are the way to go. Squats When you want to work your legs, it’s hard to beat squats. These work your glutes and quadriceps, and they’re even a great exercise to do before walking or jogging. However, it’s important to keep your form in mind when doing squats. Planks At a glance, planks have a lot in common with pushups, but in reality, planks work very different muscle groups. Planks work your arms, legs, and core all at the same time. In fact, if you don’t want to (or cannot) do situps, planks are an excellent alternative. It’s all about holding your body in an elevated, level position for 1–2 minutes. You will feel the burn!

l P h y s October is National Physical Therapy Month, making it the perfect opportunity to celebrate the people dedicated to improving the health and well-being of others. Physical therapists are an important part of our society, and their efforts deserve recognition. Here are a few things you need to know about this month’s observance. When Did National Physical Therapy Month Begin? Originally started in June 1981, the annual celebration of physical therapy took place for one week instead of a whole month. In 1992, the holiday was extended, dubbed National Physical Therapy Month, and moved to October to prevent any conflict with the annual American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) conference held every June. Since then, this holiday has become an icon for APTA members, physical therapists, and many health providers throughout the U.S. Why Is It Important? The top priority for the APTA each year is to educate people on how physical therapy can help improve health. Physical therapists want people to understand that they don’t have to rely on medication to go about their daily lives and that physical therapy can even help patients avoid surgery. In addition, National Physical Therapy Month offers a membership). I’m here to tell you that this is not true at all! There are many body-weight exercises you can do right in the comfort of your own home. You’ll save big on gym membership fees and build up your strength. One of the biggest reasons people tend to not focus on strength training at home comes down to the fact that they have no idea where to begin, which is totally understandable. I recently started a workout routine through GMB (website: GMB.io ). This website is essentially an online gym, and they focus a lot on body-weight exercise. This is great because you don’t have to worry about equipment, so you can get started relatively quickly. Of course, you don’t necessarily need to rely on a website to get started on strength training. There are many exercises you can do right now that utilize your body weight to improve strength and tone. Here are a few examples: r a t i n g t h e T h e r a p i s t s

great opportunity to practice self-care to promote better physical and mental health. What Can You Do to Celebrate? The best way to celebrate National Physical Therapy Month is to appreciate your physical therapist, learn more about the benefits of physical therapy, and find

new habits to become more active. Look into getting involved in a sport, yoga, tai chi, or any other activity that allows you to be physically active.

If you know a physical therapist, take the time to talk to them about their profession and thank them for everything they do. Physical therapists dedicate their lives to ensure that people can return to living pain-free, and their commitment deserves mountains of praise.

During the event, the 300-year-old Philipsburg Manor is transformed into a living nightmare, where vampires, witches, ghouls, and undead soldiers lurk in the shadows. They all serve the dreaded Headless Horseman and are determined to make sure guests don’t leave alive! But it’s not all scares in Sleepy Hollow. There’s plenty of Halloween fun for all ages. Sleepy Hollow boasts relaxing hayrides, tours of Irving’s home, live readings of famous Halloween stories, performances of a brand- new musical based on Irving’s spooky tale, and the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, an incredible exhibition of over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins. village of North Tarrytown, New York, where many events of the story take place, officially changed its name to Sleepy Hollow. Today, the town becomes one big Halloween party during the month of October. Sleepy Hollow is home to many historic landmarks, including the Headless Horseman Bridge and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving himself was laid to rest. Evening lantern tours of the cemetery are a popular attraction, and Irving isn’t the only spooky celebrity buried there. Fans of the Gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows” will be delighted to enter the crypt of famed vampire Barnabas Collins.

In 1790, a school teacher named Ichabod Crane was riding home alone from a harvest festival in the village of Sleepy Hollow when he encountered a mysterious rider on horseback. Crane, horrified by the horseman’s missing head, turned and ran in the opposite direction. The Headless Horseman gave chase, hurling his own decapitated head at the terrified teacher. Ichabod Crane was never heard from again ... or so goes “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving.

Another highly anticipated stop for many guests is Sleepy Hollow’s premier annual
