QUALITY MILK NEEDS QUALITY WATER

results than shallower models, in which cows can bang their muzzles on the bot- tom. Because water contamination can be

caused by many different factors, adequate checks and controls should be established on every farm.

If the water that human beings drink has a major impact on their health, it’s only natural that the drinking water given to a herd of dairy cows will also have an impact on their health. That also means there will be an impact on the quantity and quality of their milk production. Farmers should be vigilant about the quality of water available on their dairy farms, where high output is of the essence. Drinking water should be tested for bac- teria, a process that is already included in practically all farm safety procedures. In some regions, milk producers have to carry out a water analysis once a year. The frequency could increase depending on the supply source and whether it is under-

ground water, surface water, or river water.

Animals that drink contaminated water react quickly but in different ways. Bad water can even cause sows to miscarry and chickens to wet their litter from severe diar- rhea. The situation is a bit blurrier for dairy cows, however, as there are a number of other factors that can account for sudden diarrhea, such as the presence of toxins in a fodder of lesser quality. A lactating cow can easily require 125 litres of water per day and even more during a summer heat wave. The configuration of the drinking trough could also affect the animal’s direct access to water. Drinking troughs of the right depth will give better
