King's Business - 1930-04

April 1930 When we are in doubt or difficulty, when many voices urge this course or the other, when prudence utters one advice and faith another, then let us be still, hushing each intruder, calming ourselves in the sacred hush of God’s presence; let us study His word in the attitude of de vout attention ¡ let us lift up our nature into the pure light of His face, eager only to know what God the Lord shall deter mine—and ere long a very distinct impres sion will be made, the unmistakable forth- telling of His secret counsel. It is not wise, in the earlier stages of Christian life, to depend on this alone, but to wait for the corroboration of circumstances. But those who have had many dealings with God know well the value of secret fellowship with Him, to ascertain His will. Are you in difficulty about your way? Go to God with your question; get di rection from the light- of His smile or the cloud of His refusal. If you will only get alone, where the lights and shadows of earth cannot interfere, where human opinions fail to reach—and if you will dare to wait there silent and expectant, though all around you insist on immediate decision or action—the will of God will be made clear; and you will have a new conception of God, a deeper insight into His nature and heart of love, which shall be for yourself alone—a rapturous expe rience, to abide your precious perquisite forever, the rich guerdon of those long waiting hours. —o— April 26— “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matt. 28:20). The passage is free and not stopped; the print of the footsteps of the Fore runner is clear and manifest, and many have gone before you. It is not a life by doing or holy walking, but the living of Christ in you. I f you look to yourself as divided from Him, you must be more than heavy. Let all your wants lie upon Him; you are His debtor, grace must sum up, and sub scribe your accounts as paid; stand not upon items, cast yourself upon Him who justifieth the ungodly; look to the east, the dawning of glory is near. Your Guide is good company, and knoweth all the miles.and the UPS AND DOWNS in the way.—Samuel Rutherford. No distant Lord have I, Loving afar to be; Made flesh for me, He canriot rest Until He rests in me. Brother in joy and pain, Bone of my bone was He; Now—intimacy closer still— He dwells, Himself, in me. I need not journey far This dearest friend to see; Companionship is always mine; He makes His home with me. I envy not the Twelve; Nearer to me is He: The life He once lived here on earth He lives again in me. Ascended now to God, My Witness there to. be; His witness here am I, because His Spirit dwells in me. —Maltbie Babcock.

CHRISTIAN to fall into despondency. “Temptations” is another word for trials. We have our trials, some open, some secret, some of the body, some of the soul. But there is a needs-be for them. “Himself hath done it” should check every murmur. The weary nights of pain, and the happy days of health; the sad dwelling where you stand alone, and the bright home where all you love is held most dear; the darkened chamber where you gave the last long look, and the scenes where you held sweet converse—we may count ALL joy, because one as much as the other is JUST THE EXPRESSION OF OUR FATHER’S WILL.— —Canon Harford-Battershy. I cannot always trace the way Where Thou, Almighty One, dost move, But I can always, always say That God is love. When fear her chilling mantle throws O’er earth, my soul to heaven above, As to her native home, upsprings, For God is love. —o— April 24— “When ye pray, say, Father” (Luke 11:2). To a friend of the, writer, a poor man, prior to the days of chloroform, related how it had been necessary that his little boy should undergo a most painful opera tion. The father explained this to his child, asking if he could bear it. “Yes, father, if you will hold my hand.” The hand was held, the boy was patient, and health was restored. In every trial, our Father holds our hand, and recovery is certain; shall we not, then, be “patient in tribulation” ? — Dr. Newman Hall. Hold ThoU my hand! So weak I am, and helpless: I dare not take one step without Thy aid! Hold Thou my hand! for then, O loving Saviour, No dread of ill shall make my soul afraid. Hold Thou my hand! And closer, closer draw me To Thy dear self—my hope, my joy, my all: Hold Thou my hand! lest haply I should wander, And, missing Thee, my trembling feet should fall. Hold Thou my hand! The way is dark before me Without the sunlight of Thy face divine: But when by faith I catch its radiant glory, What heights of joy, what rapturous songs are mine! Hold Thou my hand! That; when I reach the margin Of that lone river Thou didst cross for me,' A heavenly light may flash along its waters, And every wave like crystal bright shall be. ■—o— • April 25— “Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, vbhen ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left” (Isa. 30:21).
