MARCH 2020

5 GENERATIONS OF LESSONS

March 15 is Incredible Kid Day, and it’s strange; when I think about it, it doesn’t seem like having kids changed me all that much. But when I think about who I am now and who I was before I had children, it’s obvious I have changed a lot. The biggest change in me is that I used to be content to work more or less all day every day. Now, knowing my kids are at home gives me a reason to be efficient with my time so I can get home and spend time with them. When it was just me and my wife, we thought we were busy, but looking back, we didn’t even know what busy was until we had our kids. It was amazing because once our kids were in the picture, we started finding time we didn’t even know we had. Becoming a dad has also made me more patient. We have a manager at Janet Davis Cleaners who was with us when I had my first child, and she left for a few years soon after that. Recently, she came back to join us again, and the first thing she noticed about me was that I am more patient. Having kids helped me get that way. I still have big goals, and I still feel impatient about reaching them sometimes, but with the small, day-to-day tasks of being a small business owner, I have much more patience thanks to having kids. We’re a small company, and everybody here has to fill a lot of roles. Sometimes, when we hire somebody, I’m the one who sits down and teaches them how we run our business. And in the past, when somebody had a hard time mastering a process or understanding a concept, I might have made the mistake of deciding too quickly they just couldn’t understand it. But I’ve seen my children grow and change, and because of that, when somebody gets stuck now, the assumption I make is I haven’t done a good enough job teaching it, and I need to explain it in a different way.

at negotiating, and I’m a better manager. I’ve always had an appreciation for parents, especially single parents. But being a father has helped me really understand how brutal it can be to be up all night with your kid who has an ear infection. I can also better identify when an employee is just using their kids as an excuse because they overslept. We’re a fifth-generation business at Janet Davis Cleaners, which means the fathers and mothers in my family have been bringing the lessons they’ve learned through parenthood to the business for a long time. Frequently, my dad and I get compliments from the vendors we work with about how effectively we work together on the business even though we are family. Maybe that’s because most of what I know about management came from my dad. And as I write this, I wonder: What did raising me teach my father about running Janet Davis when I was a little boy?

REFERRING EXCELLENCE

5 Generations of Upholding the Family Name

ON NATIONAL MOM AND POP BUSINESS OWNERS DAY

March 29 is National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day, which is huge for small businesses everywhere. Mom-and-pop businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy; Small Business Trends reports that mom-and-pop businesses account for 64% of gross domestic product (GDP) and generate 78% of all new jobs. Furthermore, no matter what turns the economy takes, small- business owners are less likely to lay off their employees than big corporations. Mom-and-pop businesses support all communities, and you can support them by celebrating this unofficial holiday! GIVE YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY A BOOST! Shopping locally has a massive impact on your community. Local businesses return three times the amount of money to the local economy than larger corporations do. With that big of a returned investment, your community can support even more small businesses that generate a wealth of jobs and keep the cycle going. In addition to the economic boost, products from small businesses are usually higher quality, which makes them a better value for your dollar. Take this day to shop for birthday and holiday gifts for your loved ones that will bring them great joy and last a lifetime. GET SOCIAL AND SPREAD THE WORD! While small businesses utilize every form of marketing available, social media is essential for their success and growth. After shopping at your favorite mom-and-pop business, share that experience on your social media! When you write a post on Facebook or take a picture for Instagram, be sure to tag the business and use relevant hashtags so your friends, family, and everyone else in your community can shop there too. Writing reviews on Google Reviews and Yelp helps establish validity for the company. When another potential customer looks for reviews, they know they’re getting quality products and services from a well-established pillar of the community. The local businesses that are active on social media may post deals and sales for that day only, so keep your eyes peeled and be sure to follow all your favorite businesses!

Janet Davis Cleaners has been serving this community for five generations. When we dry clean for you, whether it’s everyday workwear or something special like a wedding dress, we are focused on more than just getting the job done as quickly as possible. At Janet Davis Cleaners, doing a good job is about more than just getting a return customer — although, of course, we love it when our customers come back over and over again. To us, doing a good job is about maintaining the standard of excellence family members put in place generations ago. It’s about upholding the family name. At Janet Davis Cleaners, we care about providing only the very best quality and service. And when you notice our hard work and refer your friends and family, it makes a real difference to our bottom line. According to Entrepreneur magazine, a whopping 85% of small business owners say the best way for them to acquire new customers and keep their businesses healthy is referrals. That’s certainly true for us. If you’ve referred your friend or family member to us, thank you for trusting us to serve them and take care of their needs to the very highest standard. It means a lot to us. Anything you do to help spread the word is valuable to us whether that means typing in a Google review or telling your best friend about us when it’s time for her to restore and preserve her wedding gown. We plan to be in business for many more generations, and with your help, we can make that a reality.

Why Janet Davis Cleaners Is Ditching PCE SAY GOODBYE TO POTENTIAL HAZARDS

We are excited to announce that we have eliminated the use of the potentially hazardous solvent Perchloroethylene (PCE, PERC). In its place, we’ve installed state-of-the-art, professional wet-cleaning equipment. This new equipment doesn’t run the risk of damaging delicates like silk or wool like home washers and dryers do. Originally developed in Europe, wet cleaning is the best cleaning method for the environment. Professional wet cleaning combines computerized control of the machine’s cycles, the precise combination of soaps and additives, and the proper temperatures to achieve the same cleaning results as our old dry-cleaning machine did. This is safe for nearly all materials and much more environmentally friendly! You almost need to see it to believe it. In our testing, I was blown away by the lack of smell in the finished items: no soap fragrances, no “wet dog” smell, and certainly no chemical smell. Nothing. The fabrics feel just like they do before cleaning, with no additional stiffness or wrinkles. It’s amazing! In addition, we still have our new dry-cleaning machine that uses DF2000. DF2000 is a solvent made in a lab to be environmentally friendly, even more gentle on clothes, and yet still aggressive at removing dirt, oil, and stains. It’s all the good stuff without the odor and potential environmental risks.

We offer these two distinct cleaning methods because, quite simply, one is better at removing water-based stains (most beverages, blood, bodily fluids, etc.), and the other is better at oil-based stains (greasy food stains, adhesives, candle wax, etc.). All stains can be separated into one of those two categories, and now, we have the absolute best tool to deal with both! Now more than ever, your clothes will be cleaned in an environmentally sound manner, without odors, shrinkage, distortion, or damage. Isn’t that why you bring us your items in the first place?

There’s no place quite like Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day. What was once a purely religious holiday to honor the legend of St. Patrick chasing all the snakes out of the country has turned into a global celebration. But if a trip to Ireland isn’t in the budget, check out these three little-known stateside destinations that are just as festive. SHORT AND SWEET IN ARKANSAS Thanks to the clever thinking of some Irish friends meeting for a pint at a bar on one of the shortest streets in the world, Bridge Street in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the First Ever 17th Annual World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade will travel 98 feet once again this year. Don’t assume the turnout isn’t robust just because the distance is staggeringly low. The parade lasts for hours, drawing thousands of people to watch celebrities, musicians, bands, floats, and Miss Arkansas glide by. The event also features a Blarney stone kissing contest and a parade king and queen. A LITTLE LUCK IN AMERICA’S HEARTLAND O’Neill, Nebraska, is home to the world’s largest shamrock and more unique St. Patrick’s Day traditions. This Irish community doubles down on its heritage every March with a traditional CELEBRATE WITH THESE LITTLE-KNOWN FESTIVITIES STAYING STATESIDE FOR ST. PADDY’S?

parade, music, and Irish dancing. But the town also hosts a popular dodgeball tournament and donkey basketball. What could be better than pummeling your opponents in dodgeball and outpacing the competition while riding a donkey in the school gymnasium? Perhaps enjoying a pint or two with your teammates afterward. And O’Neill is just the spot to do it. OHIO’S LITTLE PIECE OF IRELAND You may not be able to fly to Ireland, but you can visit a little piece of it right in the U.S. Head to Dublin, Ohio, this St. Patrick’s Day for a traditional celebration sure to put a wee bit o’ pep in your step. Partake in a traditional Irish breakfast or enjoy a parade complete with bagpipers and Irish dancers. Boasting one of the largest celebrations in the U.S., Dublin is an affordable alternative for those looking to celebrate the Irish way.
