Headteacher’s Welcome I am delighted to welcome you to Alderwasley Hall School and Sixth Form. We are exceptionally proud of every aspect of our school and homes, from the academic and social achievement of our learners, to the outstanding specialist intervention and support we can provide for young people in our classes and our care. The school is set in rural Derbyshire with close transport links to the diverse cities of Derby and Sheffield and we specialise in working with young people with Autism and Developmental Language Disorder. We have over 30 years of nationally recognised skill and experience within the educational field of ASD and Communication and our team of Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists is one of the largest in any school across the country. This, alongside our Mental Health Team provides us with an unrivalled level of expertise. Our underpinning ethos of “Unconditional Positive Regard and fulfilment in life” guides all that we do and our outstanding outcomes, we believe, speak for themselves. We provide each young person with academic and social challenge through highly personalised, creatively designed programmes and curricula along with an extremely strong, well-established pastoral system of support, care and guidance. I am extremely proud to be the Headteacher of our school, a school which I believe, gives young people an exceptional chance to fulfil their academic, social and independence potential. Whilst I know that you will find the information in our prospectus interesting and informative, nothing gives you a better insight into the true ethos of a school and home than seeing it for yourself. Our Aim For our students to reach their full potential and feel an integrated and valued member of society. We do this by: • Giving students a sense of belonging • Developing a sense of productivity • Promoting emotional and physical wellbeing
Our Approach Our teachers plan and deliver lessons in collaboration with our large Therapies team. Primary Curriculum Planned to support students to develop the capacity to formulate and communicate ideas and feelings whilst enhancing perceptual skills.
Sixth Form Curriculum Supports the transition into the next stage of their education and/or employment journey. Additional external qualifications (GCSE, BTEC & A Level) are offered along with access to FE provision in the local and wider area, if appropriate. Secondary Curriculum Is a broad and balanced curriculum that builds on the skills acquired in Primary and further promotes independence, literacy, numeracy, creativity and problem solving. All students are supported to achieve external qualifications as appropriate to their pathway.
Therapies & Specialist Services
We have one of the largest teams of Speech & Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists in the UK, outside of the NHS.
We provide bespoke Therapies through individual, paired and group intervention alongside in-class team teaching. We also have a large team of Mental Health Practitioners who provide individualised programmes including support and advice for teams. Our Health Promotions Team oversee all aspects of the young people’s healthcare plans and medication, along with providing general advice and support for all health related issues.
We have a student Wellbeing Officer on each site who is available throughout the day providing support for all students. They also look after our school dog - Bramble.
Residential Our two childrens’ homes provide a modern, warm, welcoming and homely environment with an emphasis on improving independence, choice-making and daily living skills. Young people have access to an individualised programme of recreational activities both on site and in the local and wider community.
Parents & Carers We recognise the vital role that parents and carers play in a student’s placement and we pride ourselves on the excellent links we nurture with parents and carers. We offer regular advice and guidance for parents and carers to support their child at home in order to ensure the very best outcomes.

Alderwasley Hall School and Sixth Form is an independent school for day and residential students aged 5 to 20 years. Placements are funded by local authorities and our students come from all over the UK. We offer a mainstream curriculum which is adapted to meet the individual needs of our students. Therapies are integrated throughout the curriculum and we provide a truly holistic approach, with students at the centre of this. Our approach has a proven track record of producing exceptional outcomes for students, both educationally and socially, enabling them to become happy, confident, independent and valued members of society.
The school is rated Outstanding by Ofsted.
Referrals & Assessments We’re able to offer a range of flexibl e placement options including day, 52 week, term time and weekly residential. We offer a free, no obligation suitability assessment.
