2.13 General Practice at the Front Door (GPFD) Service delivered across the regions Acute Trusts – The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (JPUH), Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust (QEHKL) and Norfolk and Norwich
University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) NPC commenced delivery of the GP Front Door (GPFD) service across Norfolk and Waveney in 2021. It was introduced at JPUH in September 2021, followed by QEH in January 2022 and NNUH in July 2023. The service offers patients timely access to general practice appointments while helping emergency departments manage rising urgent and emergency care demand. GPFD supports ED teams by improving patient flow, reducing pressure, and ensuring patients receive the most appropriate care.
The service operates seven days a week, 365 days a year, between 09:00 hours and 21:00 hours. However, during 2025/26, increasing demand for urgent and emergency care was recognised across the system. In response, GPFD Service teams worked in partnership with JPUH and QEH to pilot an extended operating hours service. This collaborative and responsive approach supported improved Emergency Department performance, while also enhancing patient pathways and overall experience of care.
The overall number of patients seen in the GPFD services for the 2025/26 period were:
