2.20 Referral Validation - Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (QEH), and the James Paget University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (JPUH) From February 2026, a three-month programme of referral validation support was delivered at both QEH and JPUH, with a strong emphasis on improving patient safety, clinical appropriateness, and the overall quality of care pathways. This work involved proactively reviewing patients awaiting outpatient appointments to confirm whether specialist input remained clinically necessary. Where an appointment was no longer required, patients were safely removed from waiting lists, and their registered GP was informed to ensure continuity of care. This approach supported safer, more responsive services by ensuring that patients only remain on waiting lists where there is a clear clinical need, thereby reducing the risk of unnecessary appointments and improving access for those requiring timely intervention. Support was provided across a number of specialties, including Pain Management, general surgery, Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT), and Urology, contributing to more efficient use of clinical capacity and shorter waits for patients in genuine need of specialist care. Examples of this support work includes: Pain Management (QEH) : 469 patients were reviewed and contacted. Of these, 24 were safely removed from the waiting list following clinical validation, with a further 114 patients identified for removal and formally notified by QEH.
