Gorman gagne GRENVILLE-SUR-LA-ROUGE | Le choix du conseil n’était pas le choix du peuple lorsque les électeurs de Grenville-sur-la-Rouge se sont exprimés dimanche. Louise Gorman a reçu 358 voix tan- dis que Ken Duff en a récolté 246 dans la course pour le siège du conseiller numéro 5. M. Duff avait obtenu l’appui du conseil municipal qui le considé- rait comme «le candidat idéal» pour remplacer l’ancien conseiller Raymond Larose, décédé le 1 er janvier. Mme Gorman a terminé deuxième dans la course pour le poste numéro 4 en novembre, récoltant 325 voix com- parativement à 620 pour le vainqueur, Sébastien Gros, et 251 pour le conseil- ler sortant, Alain Carrière. «Je suis une femme d’équipe, je suis bien entendu prête à travailler avec tous les membres du conseil», avait déclaré Mme Gorman au cours de la campagne. Elle entend soulever plu- sieurs points à la table du conseil, dont l’augmentation salariale récente des élus municipaux, l’augmentation conti- nuelle des évaluations de taxes fon- cières et les nouvelles dépenses d’avo- cats qui s’accumulent à un rythme soutenu. «Moi, je suis prête à travailler à l’an- cien salaire, ce qui serait selon moi plus équitable. Pour de plus en plus de résidents de Hawkesbury, Champlain et Hawkesbury-Est, le nettoyage de printemps comprend un voyage au garage municipal de Hawkesbury. C’est là que la collecte de déchets domestiques dangereux a lieu. Samedi de la semaine dernière, plusieurs gens ont profité du service. L’ajout d’un deuxième dépôt de déchets ménagers dangereux en 2009 a donné le résultat souhaité -- le volume de produits dangereux détournés des sites d’enfouissement a augmenté de façon spectaculaire. Le volume détourné a augmenté d’environ 20 tonnes par an à environ 30 tonnes depuis que les trois municipalités ont décidé de maintenir les collectes en mai et octobre. Certaines employées de la compagnie Drain- All ont porté des vêtements protecteurs tandis que d’autres, comme Anne Sophie Tétrault, de Gatineau, ont embarqué dans leur travail.

“We just knock on doors and ask if we can hunt on their land. Most of the time, farmers will say “Yes,” but sometimes they say, “No.” They have different reasons. Some don’t want us on their land because it is turkey season. We don’t complain. I understand their reasons.”The chief observed:“We don’t waste anything. We eat everything but the feathers.” The down is used to stuff pillows and blankets. The Cree bring their own freezers. “When the freezers are full, we have to go home,” said Blackned, who hunts with his son and grandson. “We get about an average of 150 geese over the two weeks we are here.”The
meat will be shared among members of their community when they return to Was- kaganish. In the afternoon, the hunters scout out areas where geese are plentiful. “The next day, we get up at 4 a.m. and we are in the fields by 5:30 or 6, so we can beat the geese back to their spot.” The waterfowl season in this district lands in the Fall. However, the Cree can legally hunt here in the Spring because of tradi- tional Aboriginal hunting rights. Algonquin and Mohawk tribes in Ontario issue the visitors letters of authorization, permitting them to hunt in the Ottawa Valley.

PLANTAGENET | While Spring marks the start of the migration of waterfowl in eastern Ontario, it also signals a 12- hour, 1,100-kilometre southward trek by members of the Cree nation of James Bay, Québec. For the past several years, native hunters have visited the region at the start of April to shoot Canada geese. For them, the long trek is worth it. “We don’t have the same population of geese back home as you have here,” explained Waskaganish Chief Gordon Blackned during an interview last week. “Awesome” is how one member of the hun- ting party described the hunt. Prescott-Russell, temporary home to countless numbers of the large birds, is a popular spot for the Cree. The natives travel to this district during the first two weeks of April, because the mega-hydroelectric de- velopment in James Bay has disrupted their traditional hunting grounds. “At one time, there were geese in abundance in James Bay. But things have changed a lot over the past 30 or 40 years,” noted Blackned. “The massive hydro project in the backyard of the Cree nation has diverted rivers and changed the eco-system. The migration patterns changed because of all the dams and the diversion of rivers.” The natives obviously enjoy their stay in the district. “Cree get excited when they see one goose. Here, there are a lot of them,” said Blackned. Local motels and farmers are also happy

The Motel Rouleau in Alfred also houses the hunters, who provide a healthy economic injection into the region. “They love us here and they treat us well,” said Blackned, noting that management at both motels set up tents in their parking lots so the hunters can clean and dress the carcasses. The visitors receive permission from farmers to cull the large flocks that touch down in fields. Farmers are happy to see the hunters reduce the numbers of the hungry creatures that damage fields.

que le détachement de Hawkesbury de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario (PPO) avait organisée, mercredi dernier, à L’Orignal. Une quinzaine de personnes se sont réu- nies à la salle municipale de Longueuil afin de mieux comprendre comment les agents font respecter le code routier et mène des enquêtes sur les collisions. Les participants ont eu la chance de se familiariser et de manipuler les outils du

Entre 2006 et 2010, les statistiques démontrent que la conduite distraite a été la cause de 18,9% des accidents routiers, un total de 1773 accidents, dans Prescott et Russell. Au niveau provincial, la conduite distraite a été à l’origine de 9,3% des acci- dents de la route. La rencontre à L’Orignal fait partie du programme La police et vous qui donne un aperçu plus approfondi sur les services of- ferts par le service de police. Le programme se poursuit le mercredi 14 mai, de 19h à 21h, à l’école St-Victor d’Alfred. La rencontre donnera un aperçu des services d’enquête et d’identité judiciaire.

Red light district Thank goodness that in Hawkesbury’s temporary “red light” district, there have been no major crashes. As you know, for the last few months, the traffic lights at the intersection of Spence Avenue and Cameron Street had been on the blinker, “due to an essential part being out of stock for an indefinite period.” Until that elusive and vital part came in last week, the traffic lights remained on flashing red light mode, meaning that all motorists and pedestrians were obliged to make a mandatory stop before proceeding through the intersection. Four-way stops, like power outages and Boxing Day sales, can reveal much about people. At times, people will resort to the “survival of the fittest and the fastest” rule. And in many cases, common courtesy, like common sense, is not all that common. There are always a few self-important louts who will not wait their turn. However, for the most part, the hurried and harried masses managed to respect each other at Spence and Cameron, and demonstrated understanding, cooperation and patience. But then, that is no surprise, because Hawkesburgers are known for their civism. In fact, there are signs that attest to this wonderful trait. Last year, some 100 “Signature”banners were installed in Hawkesbury. Created by local artists, the banners, an initiative of Le Chenail cultural centre, have been affixed to poles on major streets. In addition to civism, the colourful standards feature the themes of heritage, prosperity and recreation. While some may suggest those latter topics have been neglected, civility is very much alive and well in the big village on the Ottawa. The town’s reputation for civic-mindedness is driven primarily by the quaint, traditional and potentially risky rite of passage that has been respected by motorists for generations. This custom is called“jaywalking” in most places. But in Hawkesbury, pedestrians enjoy the unofficial right of way whenever they want to cross Main Street. Outsiders still marvel at how much fun it is to stroll along the main drag and to see traffic come to a halt at the slightest hint that a pedestrian may be planning to cross the street. However, this practice is also dangerous. So, from time to time, the people who are trying to run the town think of enforcing pedestrian rules, and force walkers to use official crosswalks. In 2012, when the municipality studied the possibility of installing nine new crosswalks, including seven on Main, in conjunction with a public education drive by the Ontario Provincial Police detachment. Between 2009 and 2012, there were 32 motor vehicle accidents causing injury. Of this total, there were 11 accidents in town that resulted in injuries to eight pedestrians and three cyclists. As expected, no concrete action has been taken to establish the new crosswalks. This is one situation where the “Do Nothing” option is the best course of action. Cheesed off Farm-related topics are being kicked around in the political arena these days, as farmers begin applying natural fertilizer to their fields. The provincial Liberals and Conservatives are trading shots over the future of the Kemptville agricultural college and the province’s $1 million grant to the St-Albert cheese factory. The Conservatives are showing their true colours when they question the wisdom of investing in the new facilities, Glengarry-Prescott-Russell M.P.P. Grant Crack has claimed. Meanwhile, Conservative candidate Roxanne Villeneuve Robertson has charged that the Liberals’ $2 million contribution to Kemptville belies a dark agenda. “Trust me, growing up on a farm you learn a lot about spreading it a little too thick, and the Liberals are doing just that with their statement on Kemptville College. What they do not bring to the table is trust,” she has stated. As the distinct whiff of electioneering rolls over the countryside, it is refreshing to see farm issues getting some attention.

L’enquête a révélé que quelqu’un a volé les phares, d’une valeur de 4000$, d’un trac- teur de marque Fendt 724 2013. Vol de fils de cuivre Le détachement mène une enquête sur un vol de fils de cuivre d’une valeur de 3000$ qui s’est produit sur un terrain de Hydro One sur le chemin Skye dans La Nation, entre les 24 et 28 avril. L’enquête menée par l’agent Mario Gratton a révélé que quelqu’un a coup é un trou dans le grillage de la cour d’entreposage et a volé les fils. 20 accusations Au cours de la semaine du 28 avril au 5 mai, les agents de la PPO de Hawkesbury ont donné suite à 217 appels et ont porté 20 accusations. Trois vols par effraction, cinq voies de fait et 11 vols ont été signalés. Une personne a été accusée de conduite avec facultés affaiblies. Accusation Un homme du canton de Champlain est accusé de conduite avec facultés affaiblies à la suite d’un arrêt effectué par des agents à l’angle de l’avenue Spence et de la rue Cameron à Hawkesbury, le 4 mai. Michel Ducharme, 54 ans, du chemin Front Ouest, doit comparaître à la cour de L’Orignal le 4 juin. Son véhicule a été saisi pour sept jours et son permis de conduire suspendu pour 90 jours.

au département du centre de réadapta- tion pour enfants de l’Hôpital général de Hawkesbury (HGH). «Les ventes sont meilleures par rapport à l’an passé, alors que c’était le premier Grand McDon», a affirmé la gérante du McDo- nald de Hawkesbury, Lyne Monette. Une cinquantaine de bénévoles ont participé à l’événement, que ce soit en cuisine, au lave-auto ou au lave-glace. «Nous sommes
venues pour le Grand McDon, a confié Jeannine Jalbert. C’est bien que McDonald s’implique et supporte l’Hôpi- tal de Hawkesbury.» Les fonds recueillis serviront à acheter de l’équipement de pointe ou encore des outils servant à développer de la sensibilité motrice des enfants. Des bénévoles de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario, du Service des incendies de Hawkesbury et la Fondation de l’HGH ont invité les gens à donner. En après-midi, la chanteuse Manon Séguin a donné une prestation afin d’encourager l’événement. Au moment de mettre sous presse, les montants amassés n’avaient pas été dévoilés. «Si beaucoup de gens viennent souper, nous allons dépasser notre objectif», a cependant fait remarquer la gérante, Lyne Monette.

tumn. There were a number of reasons several producers postponed reaping their corn last fall, notes Quesnel. Because of high yields, producers ran out of storage space. “Plus, because of high moisture, many farm- ers decided to leave it,” he says. The early ar- rival of snow also quashed many producers’ thoughts of an early winter harvest. “There was a small window of opportunity be- fore the snow came,” recalls Quesnel. “And when it came, the snow never disappeared.” Frozen land meant that fall tillage was also set aside in many sectors, he observes. The corn that had been left standing has
weathered winter well, reports Quesnel, de- spite freezing rain and winds that had dam- aged stalks. This will result in a five per cent reduction in yields. However, the quality is good and the moisture level has dropped to 15 per cent. Once the land firms up, combines will re- turn. In most cases, soybeans will be plant- ed where corn grew last year.
Farmers ought to be pleased with what they see when they begin working their land. Snow coverage usually means that fields of alfalfa and winter wheat will emerge in good shape. “There may have been some low spots where ice accumulated,” notes the ministry official. “But by and large, the fields are in good shape.”

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture is pro- viding $2 million to Kemptville Agricultur- al College to allow the college to accept new students for the 2014-2015 academic year. But Roxane Villeneuve Robertson, Ontario PC candidate in Glengarry Prescott-Russell, says the Liberals are not committed to the school. The funding will help ensure a “bright future” for the Kemptville college, said Trai- ning, Colleges and Universities Minister Brad Duguid.
