D A IL Y Devotional Readings A M E S SAG E FOR EVERY DAY OF THE M O N T H
JANUARY 1 Needy "A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou w ilt not despise” (Psa. 51:17). I need Thee with a deep, yearning need this year. Last year’s experience humili ates me. I would not have it repeated. It silences my lips, as I would speak out strong words, pledging loyalty and undi vided devotion. I can only say, “Let every word of mine find its illustration in my life.” And let me know “the fury of an onrushing, dominating conviction” ! —A nna J. L indgren . It is not the strong heart, but the broken heart that God will not despise. —J ames S mith . JANUARY 2 United in Him "With long-suffering, forbearing one an other in love” (Eph. 4:2). “If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.” What does that mean? His love attains its end, fulfills its purpose. What is that purpose? To make us one. If we all have the love of God shed abroad in our hearts, we shall coalesce—we shall be as one; there will be unity, not only union—union of life, oneness of heart. If we are in a condition of soul harmony with God, com ing right into His presence, and if we all come to that one Center, we shall all draw nigh to one another.— E. H. H opkins . JANUARY 3 Consummate Loveliness "Yea, he is altogether lovely” (Cant. 5:16). There is in the Lord Jesus a perfect evenness of various perfections. All the elements of perfect character are in lovely balance. His gentleness is never weak. His courage is never harsh. Follow Him through all the scenes of outrage and insult on the night and morning of His arrest and trial. Behold Him before the high priest, before Pilate, before Herod. See Him browbeaten, bullied, scourged, smitten upon the face, spat upon, mocked. How His inherent greatness comes out! Not once does he lose His high dignity. —C. I. S cofield . JANUARY 4 Working Through Us "Working in you that which is well pleasing in his sighf’ (Heb. 13:21). As Jesus was entirely dependent on the Father for all His words and all His works, so the believer can do nothing of himself. What he can do of himself is altogether sinful. He must therefore cease entirely from his own doing, and wait for the working of God in him. As he ceases from self-effort, faith assures him that God does what He has undertaken, and works in him. And what God does is to renew,
to sanctify, and waken all his energies to their highest power.—A ndrew M urray .
JANUARY 5 His Provisiou for Holiness
"And he said unto them, Come ye your selves apart into a desert place, and rest a while” (Mk. 6:31). It is really one of the problems of today, in the midst of the tremendous pressure that is upon us, how to keep in touch with God, how to keep our spirits so that we can moment by moment be drawing from Him the renewal which we must have if we are not to go down under it. “They had no leisure.” Cannot you sympathize with them? Will you receive the quiet ness of nerve that you want? Will you receive by faith from His loving hands the enduement of the Holy Spirit that you need? Take the fullness of God for the infinite need of your heart and life, and go out to face whatever lies ahead with quietness and with joy. —J. R ussell H owden . “Somebody hath touched me” (Lk. 8:46). They crowded Him and pressed on every side; The multitude had very anxious grown To see the mighty Healer they had known As but a carpenter from Nazareth. They jostled Him, as eagerly they gazed, They touched Him many, many times that day; They hindered Him and sometimes blocked His way, But He could only feel the touch of faith. Today they talk of Him continually, In argument and controversy much, But He can only feel the timid touch Of any one who comes to Him in need. —A lice E. S herwood , The power of the tempter lies in sur prise. No bell rings in heaven to tell us that the dark squadrons are stealing around our castle. No storm signal hangs out to warn against the approaching depression. Only the watcher angel that loves us, and certainly the good Shepherd who pleads for us now as for Peter on Olivet, detect the stealthy approach of the enemy of our souls. Let us watch, therefore, and pray, lest we enter into temptation. I have in variably found that when I have congratu lated myself on being secure from any special form of temptation, I have been exposed to its full fury within twenty-four hours.—F. B. M eyer . JANUARY 7 Beware o f the Tempter “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matt. 26:41). JANUARY 6 The Touch He Feels
