Japan beyond normal Japan

The International University of Japan (IUJ) is a quite unique university. Despite its location in Japan, our language of instruction is English only and our programs provide a world standard graduate education in the fields of international relations and international management. Close to 90% of our students are from overseas (80% of them from Asia and Africa). They are candidates to be future leaders in their countries. About 75% of our foreign students are funded fully by the Japanese Government, including JICA.

Hiroyuki Itami President of IUJ

P.26

All our students live in our on-campus dormitories and with this 24-hour human interaction, we can provide a place , a place for wonderful international exchange and cooperation. In academic terms, we offer an educational environment in which our students can learn the logic behind Japanese development, not only world-standard theories in each of the fields of our programs. This is such a unique learning environment no other Japanese university can offer, hence we claim to be “Japan beyond normal Japan”. With this education we hope our students can grow to become the true global leaders in the future. Last year we began to increase the number of our own 100% tuition scholarships quite significantly, for both foreign and Japanese students. We welcome many of you to rise to the challenge and join IUJ. where the world cooperates

President's message / About IUJ

Alumni Voice # 01 The best decision I’ve taken in my life!

Parthasarathi Gopalaswamy (India) Microsoft Japan Co., Ltd.

MBA, Class of 2018

As the Azure Adoption Asia Lead at Microsoft, Japan, I get the opportunity to work with and empower customers and partners from all around Asia. On a typical workday I interact with colleagues, customers and partners from India, China, Japan and even Australia. IUJ gave me the opportunity to learn, understand and make friends with classmates from over 60 countries which has played a key role in shaping me into a truly international person. This one of a kind multi-cultural exposure at IUJ taught me how to be mindful of everyone’s culture and understand the different perspectives of people I interact with. Every course at IUJ is well planned with group work, business presentations and class discussions on cases. This gives you a glimpse of the real-world business issues and upskills you with the leadership qualities required to solve them. The MBA program is designed to offer the best of both the Japanese and international business worlds.

IUJ supports every student with their job search starting from getting an internship to landing their dream job. As a foreigner searching for a job in Japan, Japanese language ability becomes a key factor. IUJ also offers Japanese classes that are quite rigorous and give the best opportunity and resources to build your language proficiency. In my second year I had an amazing opportunity to go on an exchange program to the US and it certainly enriched my overall MBA experience. Extremely qualified professors from around the world, a track record of placements, well-structured courses, case-based methodology, placing importance on teamwork, an emphasis on business ethics and enriching exchange programs make IUJ’s MBA program the best in Japan. IUJ certainly paved the way for me to land my dream job in my dream company. If you are a foreigner who wants to get an MBA, learn Japanese, experience Japanese culture, land your dream job in Japan, and truly enjoy the journey, look no further than IUJ!

Alumni Voice

# 02 An educational milestone that empowers your future career in an international organization

After graduation, I applied to the Asian Development Bank Institute, which is one of the world’s leading international development policy think tanks. ADBI provides research and training capacity for policy makers of the Asian Development Bank’s member countries. As a Capacity Building and Training Associate, my responsibilities include assisting in organizing capacity building programs and implementing empirical research on prioritized development topics, which exactly fit my professional aims. Back then when I was in Viet Nam, I had a desire to work in an international organization promoting development-related and sustainability issues. To pursue my dreams, I decided to study in Japan and among the universities offering programs in English, I chose to study in IUJ’s International Development Program. The IDP was the hardest program but the most rewarding journey for me. While preparing for my master’s thesis, I could develop my research skills including collecting, compiling and analyzing data using STATA. My thesis paper was successfully published in the journal “Sustainability”. This thesis publication became a reality thanks to the continuous support of my respected supervisor, Professor Chun Yee Wong, for her untiring invaluable guidance and

her immense knowledge and experience, which inspired me to become a researcher like her. Her courses, including Econometrics and Cross-Sectional and Panel Data Analysis, were beneficial in conducting economics and quantitative research on policy-related issues. I was lucky enough to become her supervisee, then a part-time research assistant at IUJ and I am now luckier to continue to collaborate with her on a health-related paper. IUJ’s academic life did not disappoint me at all. Despite being far from busy cities, living and studying in a rural area of Niigata was a fulfilling experience. I could participate in various cultural, musical, sports, and cooking events on and off campus with friends who were high-level government officials and senior-level employees. I was the Student Representative, Head of the Lean-In Club, which could allow me to interact closely with other friends and develop my interpersonal skills. What I have learned from my valuable learning journey at IUJ was not only academic knowledge obtained from the IDP program, interpersonal skills from extracurricular activities but a professional career that led me to ADBI.

Student Life

How IUJ students spend their days? A typical student's day.

“Campus life where management skills and cross-cultural skills can be acquired at the same time.” I have been participating in the Intensive MBA program, and working hard to acquire the knowledge necessary to manage a company globally and gain multifaceted thinking skills. IUJ classes are very fulfilling as there are many opportunities to have discussions with international students from all over the world. Through discussions with them, sometimes I become keenly aware of my narrow perspective, but at the same time, I am able to encounter new values and ways of thinking. Although my program takes only one year and we are swamped every day, we actively try to interact with our friends from various countries. In order to shorten the distance between us, we often talk about each other's customs and cultures, even outside of the classroom. In terms of activities, because IUJ is surrounded by a rich natural environment, we are able to enjoy skiing in the winter and strolling

Keitaro Takizawa Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Limited

IMBA Program

under the full blooming cherry blossom trees in the spring. Through these activities and events, we can deepen our bonds.

My day begins with checking online news/newspapers to see if there is any information available that I can use in class. After that, I get ready and move to the study room from the dormitory to prepare for classes.

7:00 AM

Wake-up

1st Period

My favorite class is “Competing in Emerging Markets” . In this class, we learn knowledge necessary for firms and organizations to expand businesses in emerging markets. Discussions with classmates from diverse backgrounds are very exciting and the time goes by very quickly.

10:40 AM

2nd Period

I have a lunch in the school cafeteria with classmates. The cafeteria offers a different menu each day. Checking the daily menu is one of my daily pleasures. The cafeteria is always bustling with many students.

0:00 PM

Lunch Time

3rd·4th Period

I review what I have learned properly during the day at the library. During midterm and term end periods, I often do group work with classmates in the study room.

5:00 PM

After School

After having dinner, I go back to my room to prepare for the next day. Sometimes, student community gatherings are held where students are exposed to other cultures and deepen friendships with each other. We can also discuss any problems or concerns we may have about classes or student life. Any advice from friends is very helpful.

challenges. The program also integrates socially responsible business leadership in the curriculum and supports sustainable growth and development. The first year of the MBA Program is devoted to foundation building. Students tackle the essentials of management with an emphasis on global leadership and emerging markets through case studies that regularly include cases on business in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In addition, with case-based group discussions, students experience cross-culture communication and global team leadership. Students begin to customize their courses for their career goals from the Spring term in the first year and choose one or more specialization paths. They are also encouraged to take part in the solid Japanese language program offered by our dedicated faculty to blend smoothly into Japanese corporate culture and to enhance their employability.

As the first US-style business school in Japan, IUJ’s MBA program has bridged management thinking between international and Japanese business communities. It has helped international students access Japanese job markets and Japanese companies expand their business to global markets. Leading the fast-changing environment, it has developed the latest rigorous ideas and disseminated them widely. As a result, the program has earned many recognitions from outside accreditors like the Economist's "Top 100 Business Schools" and AACSB International, not to mention praise from its stakeholders. The curriculum puts emphasis on ‘Leveraging Emerging Markets for Global Advantage’. It focuses on the knowledge, skills, and mindset required to take the best advantage of the world's fastest-growing economies. Updated program contents have added a new critical element that exposes students to the impact of digital transformation and the 4th industrial revolution to better handle technological

The COVID Pandemic and rapid digitalization of business processes are inducing a paradigm shift in the way we conduct business. Corporations are placing increasing emphasis on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. The post-COVID-19 business environment requires managers to be cognizant of ESG issues and integrate them in business performance. IUJ's IMBA program prepares future leaders to meet these new challenges. The 12-month IMBA program curriculum is compact, rigorous, and demanding. We believe in building core competencies that enable managers to deep dive into innovative business solutions for their business. At IUJ, cases are used to better prepare managers to apply what they have learnt to real business situations. The cases focus on issues in both advanced economies and emerging markets in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. At IUJ, students from diverse nationalities work, play, and learn together on a daily basis. Summer capstone courses is the final wrap-up for the IMBA program.

Organizations can no longer delay their digital transformation. The digital future is here, right now. It is estimated that nearly 40% of all businesses may disappear in the next ten years if they do not accommodate new digital technologies. At the same time, it is a rare opportunity for small to medium-sized companies to narrow the gap with larger competitors. After nearly 20 years of offering its globally top-ranked E-Business Management Program, GSIM launched a new Digital Transformation Program (DXP) in 2021. It nurtures future leaders who can lead global businesses by integrating digital technologies and management skills.
