AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) requires the provision of “reasonable accommodations” to those qualified individuals with disabilities by providing equal, non-discriminatory program access in the academic setting. The Dean of Students office coordinates disability accommodations to ensure equal access for students with disabilities. SWOSU follows Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). If accommodations are needed by the student, the student should provide the information and documentation of functional limitations prior to the start of classes after admission to allow time for the development and arrangement of appropriate accommodations. It is the student's responsibility to request documentation from the appropriate professionals, and to request a record of accommodations received at any other educational institution. In some cases, documentation should be provided several weeks prior to the beginning of each semester so accommodation arrangements can be made in a timely manner. In order to be recognized as eligible for services and accommodations through Student Disability Services in the office of the Dean of Students, appropriate documentation of a disability must be provided on letterhead and signed by the appropriate licensed educational, mental health, or health professional who is not related to the student. A copy of Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s documentation guidelines are on the Dean of Students’ website or office, room 214, General Thomas P. Stafford Center (580) 774-3767.
Please note : Students should be admitted to SWOSU before seeking accommodations from the Dean of Students.
