AGING AND DEPRESSION The Unique Qualities and Treatments for Senior Depression

As scientists continue to unravel the root causes of depression, many experts cite everyday triggers that can prompt the disease in patients. For older adults, these triggers can be found during the transitional phases of aging, including the loss of a spouse or entering retirement. Specialized bereavement services, such as widowed persons’ groups, can sometimes diminish the unique triggers seniors can face. While medication for depression can be just as effective for seniors as any other age group, the side effects can be dangerous or interfere with additional medications or diseases, which can already be more common for these patients. A recent report by Blue Cross Blue Shield uncovered the startling effects of the combination of depression and older adults. A four-year study of 15,000 seniors found that those with depression and anxiety were 65% more likely to develop a heart condition, 64% more likely to have a stroke, and 87% more likely to develop arthritis. Ultimately, because of these chronic conditions, seniors with depression rely on more medication, resources, and medical staff than those without depression. Additionally, the report found that the 7 million older adults living with depression share the same health risks as those who are obese or smoke.

For many seniors, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy can fill in the gaps that support groups and medications may miss. In fact, a study published in the May 2019 edition of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that adults aged 60 or older who underwent TMS therapy showed a greater improvement in their depression symptoms than those younger than 60. Overall, the study found that participants of all ages showed strong improvement after the therapy. TMS therapy is a noninvasive, FDA-approved treatment that uses electromagnetism to stimulate the prefrontal cortex brain cells. The process is a multiday and multiweek regimen with little to no side effects and is covered by most insurances including Medicare. Some patients only need to undergo TMS therapy once, while other patients find success pairing TMS therapy with various other treatments.
