THE MISSING PIECE How Our TMS Therapy Can Fill the Gaps in Depression Treatment

No item in our Hope Peace Recovery (HPR) Treatment Centers of Ormond Beach office is more powerful or meaningful than the jigsaw puzzle quilt that hangs on our wall. This quilt was a gift from a patient who told us we were her missing piece, and after seven weeks of our Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy, she was optimistic about her recovery from depression. Stories of gratitude from patients are not rare for our office, as we often receive flowers, chocolates, cakes, and even big hugs from patients nearing the end of their TMS therapy sessions. Their appreciation keeps us motivated to continue supporting them as we watch them transform from a shell of a human into a healthy, functioning person. Often, when we first meet patients, they slump into our offices, avoiding the full conversations that can be so arduous for patients with depression. By the end of their treatment, we have developed a rapport, and they are often joking around with our personnel. The transformation that takes place over the course of their treatment is truly astounding, and we feel incredibly lucky that they trust us to guide them through this life-changing treatment. It’s a transformation that isn’t lost on HPR Treatment Centers’ founder Ben Klein. TMS therapy was the answer his 17-year-old daughter had been searching for nearly her entire life. Having been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, his daughter found little success with medications and had lost hope on finding a viable solution to her disorder. Almost by chance, a physician friend of Klein’s gave him a call, asking for help in purchasing a piece of medical equipment that offered revolutionary care for depression: a TMS therapy device. Taking a deep dive into TMS research, Klein discovered this treatment option offers noninvasive electromagnetic stimulation to the brain cells through a multiday and multiweek regimen. An FDA-approved treatment method, TMS benefits have been regularly studied and have offered patients like his daughter a side effect-free, healthy life. But

until recently, major insurance companies didn’t cover the treatment option. In addition, TMS devices were limited in quantity, and the marketing for this treatment plan was nearly nonexistent. Klein set out to change that, and, in the process, he changed the life of his daughter and those facing the same chronic mental illnesses by offering a readily available alternative to medicinal treatments. It’s important to understand that we do not advocate against the use of medication. We send our patients back to their physician after the TMS therapy process, and together they can decide if the patient should wean off their medication or if they should continue with medicinal treatments. We know medication can be beneficial and powerful, and some of our patients continue small dosages of their medication after treatment. But when it comes to TMS therapies, there is an edge it boasts over medicinal counterparts to treatment: the side effects. Whenever you take any medication, there are various side effects across your body that can accompany the drug. Antidepressant effects can run the gamut of weight and/or appetite issues and grogginess. When it comes to TMS therapy, only 5% of patients report side effects, which typically include headaches or mild pain at the application site. There is always the fear of the unknown, but with no sedation, 20-minute sessions, and very little effects, TMS therapy can often be the answer many patients with depression are searching for. With 36 locations in 12 different states, HPR Treatment Centers is devoted to the application of this alternative treatment option for patients with mental disorders. We believe in the power of TMS therapy and its ability to give our patients hope, peace, and recovery — just as our name and mission suggest.

RETURNING TO NORMAL Sarah Muir Shares Her HPR Treatment Centers Experience Sarah Muir admits she has always had slight depression, but when she and her husband moved from New York to Florida in September 2018, her depression deepened. From small everyday occurrences to big obstacles, like when her husband broke his back, Sarah was struggling. “Everything went wrong,” Sarah remembers. “I’ve been to the hospital nine times since September. I was crying every day; it was awful. I said to my husband, ‘I have to get help.’” Hailing from Scotland 46 years ago, Sarah says she knew it was dire that she find help for her depression for just the second time. Her pursuit of guidance led her to discover Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy and HPR Treatment Centers of Ormond Beach. At that point, Sarah says anything was worth trying, and she made her first appointment. “Just going to visit them made me feel better,” Sarah says. “Holly, Ken, Brandon, and Larry — I just love them. I really enjoyed going to see them every day.” During her first visit, Sarah cried through the appointment, but, eventually, she would spend her minutes in the chair each day chatting with Brandon, she recalls. “I didn’t sleep. I’m too noisy,” Sarah says with a laugh. “It really was absolutely 100% worth it.” Since she finished treatment, Sarah cannot stop telling others about her experience. By sharing with friends in New York and commenting on the HPR Treatment Centers’ Facebook page, Sarah has become one of the biggest advocates for TMS therapy. She has even helped new patients ease into their treatments by sharing her story and experience. But Sarah’s advocacy isn’t all talk; she says HPR Treatment Centers of Ormond Beach and TMS therapy brought some normalcy back to her life. She and her husband have returned to regularly going to the theatre, and Sarah is embracing the parts of her life that depression made hard to enjoy.

RELAX IN THESE COOL DESTINATIONS THIS SUMMER

As the scorching summer sun beats down, it’s hard to remember that just six months ago you were shivering through the winter, whether that meant a chilly 50 degrees F or bitter subzero temperatures. But if cooler temps sound like paradise, and a dip in the pool is no longer keeping you cool, it might be time to take a vacation somewhere chilly. Check out these three destinations to avoid the summer heat. ALASKA No place says chilly quite like Alaska. Trips to Alaska can be expensive during this time of year, but when you step into that crisp air with a cool mountainous view, you’ll understand why it’s a popular summer voyage. Travelers can choose to fly or take a cruise ship, and many cities feature tourism- packed excursions. A few notable locations include Anchorage, the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, and Denali National Park and Preserve. ICELAND Just as its name suggests, Iceland can be the perfect destination for travelers yearning to get away from the unbearable summer heat. With temperatures rarely exceeding 60 degrees F — the average high for the country — packing is easy for this relaxing vacation. Take a relaxing dip in one of the country’s many hot springs or enjoy tremendous views of the fjords. Even better, you can tour the country at any time because it’s sunny almost 24 hours a day. What could be better than a midnight hike around the fourth happiest country in the world? APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS Looking for something a little closer to home? The Appalachian Mountains in North Georgia or the Carolinas might be just the thing you’re after. Within an easy day drive from Central Florida, you can be enjoying the crisp air and cool breezes just a few hours of leaving the Florida heat. There are plenty of cabins, bed and breakfasts, and lodges to accommodate you, and if you go before the peak fall season, you’ll be able to find these places at very affordable rates. Some places in the North Carolina mountains rarely get above 80 degrees in the summer months. It is an ideal spot to enjoy cool weather and a relaxing time. If you enjoy a nice drive in the mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway is always a sight to see.

“I’m not one to tell you that I’m the happiest person alive; I have my times,” Sarah says. “I get sorry for myself, but then it goes away. The deep-rooted depression is gone … Right now, [I’m] normal … I’m enjoying things again.” If you believe TMS therapy could benefit your patients, call HPR Treatment Centers of Ormond Beach at 877-746-7251 or visit HPRTC.com to learn more.

AGING AND DEPRESSION The Unique Qualities and Treatments for Senior Depression

As scientists continue to unravel the root causes of depression, many experts cite everyday triggers that can prompt the disease in patients. For older adults, these triggers can be found during the transitional phases of aging, including the loss of a spouse or entering retirement. Specialized bereavement services, such as widowed persons’ groups, can sometimes diminish the unique triggers seniors can face. While medication for depression can be just as effective for seniors as any other age group, the side effects can be dangerous or interfere with additional medications or diseases, which can already be more common for these patients. A recent report by Blue Cross Blue Shield uncovered the startling effects of the combination of depression and older adults. A four-year study of 15,000 seniors found that those with depression and anxiety were 65% more likely to develop a heart condition, 64% more likely to have a stroke, and 87% more likely to develop arthritis. Ultimately, because of these chronic conditions, seniors with depression rely on more medication, resources, and medical staff than those without depression. Additionally, the report found that the 7 million older adults living with depression share the same health risks as those who are obese or smoke.

For many seniors, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy can fill in the gaps that support groups and medications may miss. In fact, a study published in the May 2019 edition of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that adults aged 60 or older who underwent TMS therapy showed a greater improvement in their depression symptoms than those younger than 60. Overall, the study found that participants of all ages showed strong improvement after the therapy. TMS therapy is a noninvasive, FDA-approved treatment that uses electromagnetism to stimulate the prefrontal cortex brain cells. The process is a multiday and multiweek regimen with little to no side effects and is covered by most insurances including Medicare. Some patients only need to undergo TMS therapy once, while other patients find success pairing TMS therapy with various other treatments. A TAIL OF BRAVERY

THE GUARDIAN WHO WOULD NOT LEAVE HIS WATCH Odin Lives Up to His Legendary Name

Amid the devastation of the wildfires that tore through

weren’t with them. After several agonizing days, it was finally safe enough for them to return home and survey the destruction.

California in the fall of 2017, a few heroic tales rose up to give people hope. One such tale was of Odin, a loyal Great Pyrenees guard dog. Along with his sister, Tessa, and eight rescue goats, Odin is part of the Hendel family. It was mid-October when the Hendels were awoken by the smell of smoke, a fierce orange sky, and sounds of destruction — urgent warnings from Mother Nature. Gathering everyone as quickly as they could, the Hendels got their human family members and Tessa in the car, but Odin, seated proudly next to the eight goats, refused to get in. Try as they might, the Hendels could not get him to come with them, and there wasn’t enough room in the car for the eight goats. With the firestorm quickly approaching and the risk of losing even more family members increasing with each passing minute, the Hendels made the heart-wrenching decision to leave Odin and the goats behind. The family made it to safety with Tessa in tow, relieved to be together but heartbroken that Odin and the goats

What did the Hendels find? Ashes, rubble, their barn and home burned to the ground — and Odin. There he was,

still guarding his eight goats and some small deer that had sought shelter with the brave canine. Weakened, burned, and limping, but nevertheless steadfast, Odin had never left his goats, even as the fire raged around them. Odin wagged his tail as he saw his family, happy to see they were also safe. The Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue and the Goatlandia Animal Sanctuary provided temporary shelter for the goats and pups while the Hendels rebuilt their barn. Odin received all the care he needed, along with a lot of love and treats. Today, Odin and his goats are back with their family, rebuilding their lives after this devastating wildfire. But the Hendels, and anyone who’s heard the story, won’t soon forget the bravery of Odin, the amazing pup.
